AP purchase using day ticket?

This is probably a silly question, but I remember when I was in DLP seeing signs saying "Use your ticket for today and upgrade to an annual pass" or something to that effect.
Is that only if you have purchased a one day ticket in the parks or does it include tickets as part of a hotel package?
I'm thinking ahead to the possibility of buying an AP for next June. Our November trip is all paid up, but if I could use my ticket for the last day of the November trip to buy an AP then this would be cheaper. My sister and I fancy trying to go for halloween next year as well, but this is by no means a definite. So it might not even be worthwhile, but it would be nice to know if it was an option.

no you cant use tickets that are part of a package,they have a nil value
