Has anyone's child on here taken it? Difficulty level? Any tips?

TY! :)

My DS won't take it until May, but all of the students were required to purchase this book in the first quarter:

My son took it last year and scored really high. I don't recall his exact score and he is in class now. It wasn't difficult for him but it would be difficult for my daughter who signed up and then withdrew from the class before it started. I have to say he has a FANTASTIC teacher last year who taught this class. His school has one of the highest exam pass rate in our district. His teacher also gave Saturday mock test among the thousands of flash cards DS had to do. There was a book they had to buy for extra credit (it was optional but they got extra credit points) to help study, etc.

I will go look in his room for the book he bought for extra credit.

ETA: Here is the book. This was in addition to their textbook, workbook, and summer reading book(s). We bought one summer reading book when he was in 8th grade and the teacher changed it right as summer started so we ended up with two summer reading books. LOL. He took this class last year as a Freshman. Mostly freshman take it at our school but any grade can take it.

And I think he scored a 5 (If it was a 1-5 score, which now I think it was. He was really proud of his score as I recall. LOL. He has the same teacher for his AP Psychology class this year. It's his favorite teacher.)

Our school provides the textbook. I bought the textbook and workbook at the end of 8th grade so DS could review over the summer and he had a home copy so he could use the home copy at home for assignments and not worry about transporting heavy books.

This is the textbook our school uses.

And the First and Second Summer reading book. The teacher said the first book was difficult for students so he changed it.

DD originally signed up for the class for 9th grade, but over the summer after trying to read the first chapter of the summer reading book she changed her mind. I notified the school over the summer. Several of her friends pulled out the first few weeks after school started.

My DS says the book really has nothing to do with the class after you turn in the summer assignment. I tried to read the first chapter but it isn't for me. My son is great at memorizing and knowing facts like the book contains so it's totally him.

The summer reading assignment they had to summarize each chapter and write a reflection on each chapter (everything handwritten, not typed).

Our DS's summer assignment gave a list of 5 different books and depending upon the book they chose, there were different assignments. He chose/purchased that Guns, Germs, and Steel one you posted above, but I can't remember what the actual assignment was.

I'm not sure what they're doing with that "Preparing for the AP Exam" book I posted above (if they've even started using it yet), but I should probably ask him.

Freshmen only have the option of one AP class at our school, so thankfully it's the only test he'll have take (and I have to pay for!), but I'm sure he'll do fine -- he's just one of those kids that's a good test taker (unlike me).

He just received that from the teacher. It would have been nice to have had it earlier, but glad they provided for free!

Thank you! I'm going to order that today.

That's the only AP class offered to freshmen at my son's school, too.

My son is an excellent test-taker, too, in fact he competes in test-taking through our state's Governor's Cup. However, he has dyslexia, so I'm a bit worried about the writing portion. He does have a scribe for classwork/tests and they've applied for accommodations for him for the AP exam, but I don't think we've heard back yet.

My kids have, between them, taken more than a dozen AP exams. They would both rank AP Geo as "among the easiest" AP exam they took. They both scored 4's with no effort whatsoever. And, I do mean NO effort. They took the class (of course) and did the in class reviews, but did not crack a study book other than that.

This. Our high school has a great AP Human Geo teacher. He treats the kids like college students. Lecture and discussion, then homework and studying and projects on their own. They have done well enough on this test to not need a history class in college. This is the one class in high school that I have consistently seen all 4 of my kids put in a lot of time and effort and late nights at home to do well in the course-it's just required.

DD had a flaky AP Human Geo teacher, gone a lot and not organized. Even with that and the fact that DD barely studied she still got a 4 so not a terribly hard test.
She found APUSH the hardest so far but them again she isn't a big history fan.

My daughter didn't take this AP test but did take many. She's a college freshman and entered with 19 credits.

I highly recommend going on the college board website and checking out what the test covers. We did this when my daughter was, taking physics and was concerned her teacher wasn't covering the necessary material.

Turns out he wasn't. She made the choice to focus on her course grade rather than trying to learn the missing material on her own. She got an A in the class but only a 3 on the exam. It was the only one she didn't get college credit for.

The teacher needs to follow the curriculum laid out by college board for students to do well.

Good luck.

I feel like his teacher is pretty with it. I've read some of the supplemental texts she's sent home and it definitely seems college-level.

I took it, it was one of the easier AP exams (out of AP Lang, AP Lit, AP Stats, AP sciences, etc) and one of the first ones high schoolers in the area take to "get started" on AP exams. Definitely should study for it, but don't sweat it too much.

I had to be nosy and read along with this thread. Like many others, it's one of the few AP classes available to freshmen here. My oldest starts high school next year. Here, AP Human Geo is purely an elective. It doesn't count toward any required history credits for graduation, but it's something he's considered taking senior year if he wants to add in another AP class to qualify for certain community scholarships that use amount of AP classes as a consideration (I'm on a scholarship committee that takes into account how many AP classes are taken in regard to overall GPA)

One of my friends has a freshman daughter taking it this year, and she says it isn't any more challenging that other advanced courses she has taken, even in middle school, but she seems to have an outstanding teacher.

I like reading about others' experiences with different AP options!

That's how it is at our school. Well, actually it's the only AP course freshmen can take. I think he's planning on taking AP Psychology and probably an AP history (I think they offer World and US at his school).
