Haven't been a passholder in about 5 years. I used to book the room that I wanted and then simply had the AP rate applied when it was released. In addition, I used to book the rate without being a "Current" passholder and then just purchased the pass closer to check-in. Is this still possible? That is, making an AP reservation without having the pass in hand?

Yes and yes. :) You can still apply the AP discount to an existing reservation as long as it is available. And you can make an AP reservation before purchasing your AP. :)

How do you know if an AP reservation discount is available though? I thought you can't see what the discounts are unless you have an AP?

I just did this a couple months ago... Online you need to have an AP attached to your account. Doesn't have to be active, a voucher works. But you can call to get the AP rate.

If you're just curious if a discount is available, you can look here (you might need to select Filter and choose 'Passholder'):
https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/special-offers/?type=passholder-offer&sort=disneyPicks

It won't tell you anything specific (which resorts, rooms, precise rate, etc) but I check it daily just to see if a discount has become available for our travel dates. You can also find out by calling.

Edit: I have purchased but not activated my AP, and I'm able to view (and book) Passholder rates when I sign in. If you haven't purchased an AP but discover a discount and would like to know what the rate is, you can call. I did this when we were thinking about becoming passholders. So one of the perks to being a Passholder is that I no longer have to place frequent calls to Disney. Lol.
