I booked today using the AP discount and got a great deal. $40 off the nightly rate for 2 rooms (saving us $80 a day!). One thing though, since we used the AP discount, the CM on the phone said we can not get the Dining plan. Is there a reason why we couldn't? seemed kinda odd to me.

I believe it is because you can only get the dining plan on rack rate, using DVC, or through a AAA plan.

I believe the CM is correct. In order to get the DP you have to pay rack rate on your rooms. Not sure of the reason why, I guess Disney dosen't want you to stay cheap and eat cheap too.

You can get Disney Dining Experience with an AP. The DDE card costs $60 and you get 20% off your check at designated TS restaurants. Full description here: http://www.allearsnet.com/din/dde.htm

I realize it's not the same thing as the dining plan, but maybe it would help out your budget.

You can only get the DDP with a package reservation that includes park tickets or with DVC. Not a room only reservation.

I did purchase a room and ticket package.

I don't think you purchased a package IF you got the AP rate. They may be selling you some tickets, but I don't think it qualifies as a package unless the CM made a HUGE error. (Buying an AP is not a "package" ticket)

I'm pretty sure that everyone staying in the room has to be on the same package. If one of you has an AP, then you aren't all getting the same package with tickets, for each person. I highly recommend spending the $50 on the DDE card. It saved us tons of money in 12/05 when I bought an AP. Course, we stayed offsite, so we didn't do a package at all. This time we don't have AP, so we are all on package and will be able to do free dining, if offered.

You may have gotten a room and tickets, but they were essentially separate purchases. The DDP (unless you're on DVC points) is part of a specific package. The AP discount is good only for room-only reservations. Basically, they are two different discounts and cannot be combined.

ETA: Previous posters are right that the DDE card is worth checking out. You will get 10% off at some restaurants with the AP, but DDE will get you 20%.
