My mom has asked me to help one of her friends with her computer. From what it sounds like, she's having trouble with AOL - there seems to be a warning screen that keeps popping up asking her to reinstall. If I reinstall for her, will she lose her e-mail messages. I don't know much about AOL dialup or their mail program - are the messages stored on the server or are they downloaded to the computer like Outlook (and can be saved for backup).

I'm going over to take a look at the computer tomorrow but just want to get an idea of what I'm in for.

TIA :goodvibes

Whenever that has happened to me I just shut the PC down completely and restart it.

I had her do that over the phone but she says it comes up everytime she clicks on AOL and starts to log on. Usually that works for most problems on my computer :rotfl: I guess I'll have to take a closer look tomorrow ... Thanks for the suggestion though :)

copy her filing cabinet to another folder, then reinstall, then overwrite the new filing cabinet with the old one.

Your emails should still be accessable as long as you have an AOL account. You can always go to www.aol.com for web based email if you can't have AOL on your computer. All you emails will be there on the web once you log in with your screename.

You can save your Favorites and Address Book on your hard drive and then Replace/Open them once you reinstall the software.

This happened to me once and I "bypassed" the Warning by Clicking My AOL and then Access Numbers. I picked numbers then signed on, and it was ok!

I think the OP meant all the old emails that are saved. AOL only keeps emails for so long on their server. You have to save them to a filing cabinet on your hard drive in order to keep them "forever".
