Up at 7am, we shower and dress and we’re then dropped off at Gatwick South Terminal by 9.40am. No traffic at all so we’re there in no time. Get to Zone D and we’re happy to find Sunshine First and Sunshine Upper have dedicated check-in. The queue is huge for economy so it’s pretty cool. We’re checked in and off in search of breakfast within 10 minutes. We bypass Maccy D’s hoping for something a bit more substantial. We spot Frankie & Benny’s, which is one of our fave restaurants. Although we’ve never had brekkie there before we decide to try them. And we’re very glad we did. The food was lovely. Andy had a breakfast burger with an egg and I opt for a fry up. Can’t remember the name of what I had at the mo but it was 2 sausages, 2 eggs, hash browns, baked beans, mushrooms and bacon. I give hubby one of my eggs and both hash browns as I’m not too keen on them. With 2 drinks and an order of toast, it comes to about £16, not bad I thought. Very yummy and highly recommended.

From here, we wander round the shops then park our bums in some comfy seats. We’re due to be called to our gate about 11.45 and take off at 1pm. By 12.30 we’re still sat there and the time has been moved to 1.30. Five minutes later, it’s changed to 3pm. Hmm. In the 21 years it’s been since I first went on a plane this is my first delay. We’re finally called to our gate and its absolute bedlam. Everyone just stands round the gate so when sunshine first and sunshine upper are called, nobody can get through. We’ve given dirty looks and tutted as we go through. It’s a stampede and they even had stewards having to hold people back to let us through! I’ve never seen anything like it before and am left open mouthed. We finally get on the plane and turn left heading right to the front. Cha-ching! Never travelled or seen first class before and we’re stunned – as are most of the other Sunshine First passengers. The first 10 minutes on board are spent taking pictures of the amount of room we all have and everyone’s generally really excited. I’m so impressed – we can both stretch our legs out in front of us. Result! And we don’t have to disturb each other if we want to get up as there is plenty of room to get past. There are only 22 seats here so there is a lot of room. We have seats 3A & 3B.

Within 10 minutes, we’re offered a choice of champagne of Bucks Fizz so we both have a Bucks Fizz to celebrate.

Take off is ok, even though I hate it and it usually takes me about 5-10 minutes in the air before I calm down – Andy knows to leave me alone during this time or risk getting his head bitten off! We have a typically gay steward and a lovely stewardess looking after us. After a few minutes in the air, they come round with ikkle pots of Pringles – yum. Drinks are plentiful, we’re all given bottles of spring water and we never have to ask for a drink. At one point when we’re asked what we want and we say diet coke, they bring us 3 cans each. Nice. The entertainment’s quite good – not as good as Virgin’s but that’s the only thing. Everything going outbound is equal to Virgin or a bit better. We have 3 films – Daddy Day Care with Eddie Murphy, Tomb Raider 2 and Calendar Girls with Helen Mirren and Julie Walters. There are also 10 audio channels. Some bright spark had pushed hubby’s headphone socket all the way in so he couldn’t listen to anything but thankfully the engineer came to the rescue with a double headphone pin for my socket. About an hour or so into the flight, we’re served lunch. We have a starter of prawn cocktail and a bread roll. Hubby hates prawns so they take his away but don’t bring him anything else. In hindsight, we should’ve asked for some more rolls for him but we didn’t think of it at the time. The main meal is either chicken supreme or sirloin steak. I go for the steak and hubby has chicken. My steak is so soft I can pull it apart with a plastic knife and fork so I’m pretty impressed. It comes with onions, mange tout and garlic potatoes. Hubby’s chicken comes with small potatoes and mange tout which he hates so I get all his mange tout and I swap him some garlic potato. Dessert is a lovely banoffee style cheesecake. We’re then offered cheese and biscuits with port – mmm! Say no to the port but tuck into the cheese and biscuits and grapes. 3 different cheeses and 2 of them are scrummy. A while later we’re offered ice cream, then fun size choccies like smarties, aero, milky bar etc. For the remainder of the journey, the drinks are plentiful but we drink them out of diet pepsi cans. Two hours before landing, we’re served afternoon tea which consists of a hot ciabatta filled with chicken, peppers and onions (or a plain veggie version) followed by a scone with jam and clotted cream. I don’t sleep a wink unfortunately so the last hour or so I’m yawning like mad and truly fed up.

We finally land at Sanford Airport at 7.30pm US time. Hurrah! Two hours later than scheduled and its pitch black but never mind. We go straight to immigration where we pick the wrong queue and end up behind 2 people who have to be fingerprinted and have eyes scans. Sigh. Then it’s on to baggage claim. We get our 2 cases pretty quick so we’re on to customs. We get pulled over and I’m a bit alarmed by the officer’s rather fetching blue disposable gloves! He has a rummage through both cases and I’m not too keen in having my undies riffled through but what can you do. We’re finally off to Dollar. I wait outside for hubby who gets the rep from hell, who tries the hard sell of upgrading. He tries to get hubby to upgrade to a convertible, saying we’ll only have to pay one extra class, and we’ve got the basic economy so we’ll be really cramped etc. Hubby sticks to his guns and the guy gets a bit disgruntled and finally chucks the key at him. We’re both sure this is why we ended up getting charged for a full tank of fuel when the last time, we weren’t. Anyways, it’s just as well hubby refused the upgrade as the guy had lied about our car. We get to B25 and do a double-take. This is no economy car – it’s a Dodge Stratus, 2 door sporty model complete with tail fin! Yikes! We look at each other and burst out laughing.

We’re out of the airport within 40 minutes – result! It’s going smoothly – a little too smoothly for my liking. Hubby enquired at the Dollar desk about the quickest route. Travel City and Dollar recommend the 417 in their directions but we spot the I4 and wonder if that’s as quick as it looks. The dollar dude says take the I4 if you want, it’s quicker so we go to. We take the I4 turning. Ah. Nobody mentioned a toll booth. Especially an unmanned one that only has a Change 50c line or some sunshine card line. We only have notes. Bugger. We sit and ponder for a few minutes and I start to panic. Hubby parks and walks back up and sees they take card so we go back to the booth only to find it won’t accept any of our cards. Hubby decides the only way out of this mess is to reverse back up the road as going through without paying the toll has a $100 fine and we don’t want to chance it. Luckily hubby is able to reverse back up as there’s no traffic and we end up heading down the 417. Panic mode over. Bit peeved but hey ho, these things happen. Mental note: in future save some coinage! 50 minutes later, we’re driving under the Walt Disney World sign then following signs to Pop Century as I remembered it comes under the Epcot Resort Area, yay me! We park up and head for check-in. Within 5 minutes we’re done. We have our snazzy credit cards for everything to do with our stay, which I think are so cool. We head straight back to the car and drive round to park up. We’re in the 90s building and are in room 8239. We can use either the 70s or 90s car park. We opt for the 70s as it’s really close. The parking area is pretty full but we manage to find a space after a bit of driving round. The only problem with this car is getting out of it as you’re so low to the ground. We head straight for our room just to see where we are. We are both in awe of the place. So much thought has gone into it. There are icons placed around and on the buildings. Our staircase is a huge mobile phone. We’re on the 2nd floor which isn’t a long walk.

eba00411265f00000039.jpg

As opposed to back home we are actually on the 2nd floor – there is no ground floor, it’s the 1st floor for ground then 2nd etc. Great, only one flight of stairs. We find our room and we fall in love with it. It’s charming. Lovely official bedspreads, Mickey bath and facial soaps, Mickey shampoo – it’s great.

There’s a lovely collage on the wall of the 90s Disney films.

eba00411265f00000041.jpg

We get the cases from the car and find the lifts to come back in. We also find the drink machines and the ice machine. Each floor has a soda machine and an ice machine and the first floor has a snack machine too. We dump the cases and sit down. I put the TV on to have a nose and I stumble across the Top 7 Must See Things at WDW while hubby has a much needed *** outside. It still hasn’t sunk in that we’re actually here and we’re staying on site. Hubby comes back in to find me crying but I reassure him it’s because I’m happy and a little overwhelmed. By now it’s gone 10pm and we’re starving. Technically it’s already gone 3am for us so we’ve been awake for 20 hours. Hubby is shattered and doesn’t want to drive anymore so we head down to the food court for a nose. It’s humungous! It’s called Everything Pop. First off, you’ve got a huge shop which leads through to the Food Court and bar. We have a quick look through the menu for the Classic Concoctions bar – mmm strawberry daiquiris! We’re dismayed to find most of the food outlets are closing until breakfast at 6am except one. It serves individual sized pizzas or large takeaway ones, salads, meatball subs, veggie lasagne and parmesan crusted chicken. We find it hard to decide but in the end opt for a large pizza with onions, sausage, pepperoni and ham on it. I fancy some salad so grab a chicken Caesar. We’re given this device that vibrates when our food is ready – snazzy! I grab a Pop Century refillable mug for $11.99 and hubby’s eyes light up when he spots someone with a 6 pack of beer. He finds some and we pay using our snazzy credit card thingy and find somewhere to sit. 10 minutes later, our pager goes off telling us our pizza is ready. It’s delicious and we end up taking 3 slices back to our room (but it got thrown away the next day). It’s nearing midnight when we head back to our room. We finally collapse into bed at 12.45am.

Sounds like a wonderful journey...loving the photo's :)

Pop Century looks good, can't wait for more :)

Wow, can't believe the size of your seats on the plane! And your photos of Pop Century are fab!

thanx :D

Day 2 - Sunday 18th Jan

I wake up to find hubby awake and it’s only just 5am. Poor thing’s been wide awake since 4am. I get up to go to the loo and find I can’t go back to sleep afters. We’re both starving – possibly coz we ate so late last night. We get up and head out. By 6am we’re sat in Denny’s on the 192 ordering breakfast. Thank god for 24hr restaurants eh? I have the American Slam – 3 scrambled eggs with cheese, grits, 2 sausage links and 2 bacon – and hubby has the corned beef has platter with egg, bacon, sausage links and grits. Very yum. Comes to $20 including tip. Instead of heading back to the hotel we head off in search of Walmart. By this time it’s absolutely pouring with rain and I mean chucking it down. We get soaked through running to the car.

By 7.15am we’re in Walmart having a good spending spree. 2 hours later, we’re $215 poorer – oops! Not only have we bought supplies but we’ve bought a fair few cheap cds and some DVDs at $5.50 a pop, plus I’m a happy bunny as I find a nice pair of blue jeans. We get to the till to find a problem with the card. It’s dealt with and we’re led to believe that it’s something to do with our card issuer – the customer service woman said we should have informed them we were going on holiday! Hmm. We leave slightly miffed at Lloyds TSB – they’ve done this to us before when we moved house. We get about 50 yards down the road and hubby asks me to look through the receipt. I find that they’ve charged us for 2 cases of Miller Lite beer instead 1. Gits. Hubby u-turns and back we go. He runs in – it’s still pouring – and gets it sorted. So in fact we’ve only spent $195 lol! So we try again and make it back to Pop Century.

It’s still only 10.30am so hubby suggests visiting Downtown Disney on the bus instead of a park because a) its still Martin Luther King weekend, b) its Sunday and c) its still chucking it down. We walk back to the bus stops which are located in front of Classics Hall. It’s only about a 3 minute walk from the 90s building. We walk through the different decades to see all the icons.

Because we spend so much time farting round, we just miss a bus but within a minute, another one pulls up so hubby has to put out his ***. We sit there for a couple of minutes and we’ve got the whole bus to ourselves. 2 others get on and we’re on our way. 10 minutes later, we’re walking into Downtown Disney Marketplace. We like these buses! We’re being spoilt getting from door to door.
eba00411265f00000096.jpg

There’s not a long walk from the bus stop into Marketplace. First shop is the Art of Disney. Wow! Mega bucks! They’ve got some beautiful prints and they all come in frames. Can’t sneak anything like that home – shame! Next it’s on to the Christmas shop. Oh dear. I could spend an absolute fortune in here. We managed to spend $50 on an advent calendar, a wooden calendar with blocks for counting down the days until Christmas, a 2004 snowglobe and some gift tags. It’s nearing 12 so we decide to grab some lunch before it gets too busy. We head to Wolfgang Puck Express and it’s yummy. Hubby has chicken pieces and I have chicken quesadillas. Very reasonable, it comes to under $15. After lunch we wonder through Disney At Home and fall in love with most of the shop. Especially some metal hooks with Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore on them but they’re so heavy we decide to leave them in the shop. I have a nose through the Pin Trading shop and then we end up in a candy shop. Hubby buys a huge white chocolate cookie and I get a 18” tube filled with sour powder in many different powders, delish. We’re knackered by now so we head back to the hotel. Hubby soon falls asleep so I start writing. I then go for a wander to Everything Pop to top up on diet coke and nose round. I buy some tie-dyed cheesecake for hubby and some carrot cake for me. I look around the shop and fall in love with a Pooh clock so I buy it. I head back to the room to find hubby very much awake and very annoyed. Turns out we have the neighbours from hell. The parents are obviously not keeping an eye on their kids. They are banging on doors, including ours, and they left the latch on their door so all you can hear is it banging every few seconds. Turns out too they have 2 rooms so that makes it worse. I can understand us hearing the loo flush from other rooms coz the flush sounds rather violent but the screaming and shouting plus banging well it really took the piss. We grumbled while we ate our dessert. Hubby managed to get a bit of sleep while I wrote up more report. I let him sleep until nearly 7pm. We then showered and went to….drumroll please….Chili’s for dinner woohoo. And it did not disappoint. We had the boneless buffalo wings to start then we shared chicken fajitas – delish! The boneless buffalo wings were stronger than I remembered but totally gorgeous. It only took us 5 mins to drive there from Disney. So after we headed back, we find an answer machine message from reception saying hubby’s card hasn’t gone through. Grrr. As it happened twice, we ring the customer helpline back home and have a very nice person help us. It turns out it’s not Lloyds refusing the transactions through. Whoever is doing the banking in the US is querying all of them. A query did come up through Lloyds but that was because whoever went to put the $500 credit to our Disney card did it in increments of $125 – 4 times in 3 minutes so it blocked the card from working! So we decided to go to guest services to get it sorted. While down there, hubby asked when our noisy neighbours were leaving – not for nearly a week! He asked if there was any chance of switching rooms and we were asked what building we wanted. We picked the 80s building and then had to pack up again to be moved the following day.
