Anything special happen if celebrating a birthday BEFORE your trip rather than DURING your trip

My son's birthday is a week before our cruise. This trip will be his birthday present from me. Can we expect or do anything special for this birthday? Or will it not count being as his birthday is not while we are actually on the ship? This trip will already be special as it is his first cruise, but any extra advice on how to make it extra special for his birthday?!

Make sure you put a note on your account/reservation that it's your sons birthday and don't be shy about telling cast members. It doesn't have to be the exact day :)

The birthday can be 6 months away. If you tell them you're celebrating a birthday, they'll celebrate it- at least with singing and cake. My 5 year old was turning 6 a week and a half after our cruise, but since we were with family doesn't live close by, we told our servers what day we wanted to celebrate her birthday.

When my son turned 5, I made him a mickey Tshirt that said "Birthday Boy" and had the number 5 on it. When he wore it, he got all sorts of extra attention from cast members, characters, and guests. So don't hesitate to show off that it's his birthday to have some extra special experiences!

We did something similar at Disneyland. We stopped by City Hall and asked for a birthday celebration button, but explained that my b-day had been a week earlier. The cast member handed me a button and said, "Very merry Un-Birthday."

On a Disney cruise there's so many b-day celebrations at dinner, it would be a stretch of the imagination to believe everybuddy has their b-day on that actual date. It's kinda like Christmas -- how many Christmas parties have you attended that weren't on December 25th?

We haven't sailed yet, but I will say that we're cruising almost two months before our anniversary. However, this cruise is our anniversary trip/gift to ourselves and it's just when we could go. Our TA had it noted on our account and when I log in under our reservation, it shows that we're celebrating our anniversary. I don't know what they'll do and we don't expect anything, but I'd say you'll have no issues being able to celebrate your son on board!

Not being at all snarky, just noting that EVERYONE will have a birthday w/in 6 months of their cruise...either 6 before or 6 after :rolleyes1

That is exactly the right attitude to have! :) Odds are you'll get a little chocolate dessert one night (and at least when we were celebrating our parents' and my sister and my birthdays (not on the date...the cruise was between them and celebrating all), at Palo we got plates with Happy Anniversary and Happy birthday respectively at Palo). But regardless, YOU know you're celebrating and that's what matters! :)

I hope you have a great anniversary!

We just added a note about our dd's birthday. It was a week before we left and on the first night our waitstaff brought her a special dessert, sang to her, and gave her a button.

if you stop by guest services when you board they will give you a birthday button. as long as he has it on cm's will say happy birthday to him so it could be a week long party just for him with lots of well wishes. I noticed even other guests will stop to say happy birthday if they see the button.
have a great trip.

On our last cruise we were celebrating two birthdays and a PhD graduation. Our servers asked us which night for each of us we wanted to celebrate each birthday. Also, they did something special for the PhD -- and a neighbouring table ALSO did, once they found out what we were celebrating ! :-)

My birthday isn't until 3/17 but we were cruising last week with my parents, who we only see every few months, so they wanted me to celebrate early with them. They notified our servers and my concierge host and my door was decorated, I was given a "birthday" pin, and we had cake and singing at dinner. It seemed at dinner there were A LOT of birthdays during the week, so I think a lot of people celebrate before or after their birthdays. No one cares and everyone is quick to say "happy birthday" when they see your button/pin.
The concierge staff certainly knew it wasn't my birthday via my booking information, but they treated me like it was.
Happy Celebrating!

We've celebrated graduations, birthdays, kidney transplants and anniversaries. None of the dates were the actual date of the cruise. Not everybody can cruise on their special days. Just let DCL know and they will help you celebrate.
