Anything special for first birthdays?

My son will be celebrating his first birthday the day before we arrive. I'm bummed we can't take advantage of the admission on your birthday promotion. I am getting his first haircut at the Mainstreet Barber Shop. Anybody know of any other special stuff we can do to celebrate his graduation from "infanthood". I am open to anything at any of the parks, hotels, etc. Thanks for the ideas!

How about going to a character meal? I think the whole trip though is a great birthday! Just being in Disney is a great celebration!

We ordered a special Mickey birthday cake for our ds' birthday dinner. We got some ideas from the cake thread here on the DIS.

When we were there last year just days before DD turned 2 (last day possible to fly on a lap ticket), she got a phone call from Goofy at the Coral Reef and a birthday desert. I realize at 1 that part will seem a little less exciting but the best part was when we got back to our room that night, Mickey had left a balloon and a signed birthday card in our room. DD loved it and I'm sure even at 1 a mylar balloon will be fun to play with.

My dd just celebrated her first birthday at Disney. She was given a birthday cupcake at a few different restaurants (which proved to just be a huge mess, as all she wanted to do was smoosh the icing between her hands!) which was a nice surprise. CRT put castle confetti on the table for her bday. Oh, and Tusker House gave her a really cute birthday card, signed by all the characters.
We thought about ordering a cake ahead of time, but decided that with desserts on the dining plan, it would just be overload for us. But they do have some really beautiful cakes. The pictures on the cake thread (over on the disney restaurants board) are just amazing!

Of course we aren't travelling for his bday, but DS will turn 2 right before we arrive. We feel bad because we are leaving the weekend of his bday and want to do something special without spending gobs more money. Does anyone know if the Crystal Palace will do anything special for bday like the birthday card, or cupcake? Should I tell them before we go? Whoever got the balloon from Mickey in the room, did you leave a message at the front desk? Thanks!
