Our cat drinks water ONLY from the bathroom faucet-ONLY while it's running! The water drips over his head, then he laps it up in the bottom of the sink. He doesn't mind at all that he gets water on his head, actually seems to find it part of the experience. Then he stands up and shakes the water off, all over us and the mirror. I thought cats didn't like contact with water? All our other cats have drunk water, but never have we had one who actually likes the water pouring/dripping on his head. Is this weird? Anyone else's cat do this? Oh, and he has this strange chirp, not meow, when he jumps up on the bathroom sink to get our attention.

Yes. I used to have a cat that would sit in the kitchen sink and wait on someone to come by and turn on the faucet so he could drink. Getting wet during this process didn't bother him.

Both of my cats loved water and would do things like that. I eventually got them a cat fountain (http://radiofence.com/drinkwell_pet_fountains.htm) and they love it!!! No more need to turn the faucet on for the babies.

I think I know that chirp too... quite cute. My one baby does it all the time. Cats are silly little things, aren't they :)

Yes. My goofy cat does that too.::yes:: And he'll also drink out of the toilet. But NEVER out of his bowl.

My cat prefers the bathtub faucet. I guess running water is fresher and some cats have discriminating taste. :D Like helenabear, I ended up getting a cat fountain for my kitty, just because I didn't want to waste water by having the faucet turned on all the time. You can get them at any pet store and they aren't too expensive.

My first baby years ago would only drink out of a running faucet. I have 2 Maine Coons now whose heads are almost always wet. We have a drippy faucet that they like but at least they will also drink out of a bowl .

Our youngest cat is a water baby. He loves to jump in the tub when I am in it (which I don't like because I don't care for even more cat hair floating around me)(smile). Now he sits up on top of the toilet until I get out of the bathtub and then jumps into the bathwater, wading, splashing and playing. I've never had a cat like this before, but he just loves water for some reason.

Yep, our 2 male kitties do this. Though they prefer the bathtub faucet. They get their little heads all wet too.

My cats refuse to drink from a bowl. Instead they both drink from the pond in the back garden or the waterfall that leads into the pond. They also like to drink from taps. My best friends cats like to drink from the tap in the kitchen too.

I have one too!

She loves water, just puts her head under the running tap and gets a drink. Doesn't care how hard the water is running or if she gets all wet.

She has fallen into the pond a couple of times. She just calmly climbs out, like she meant to do it ;)

This is a hoot! You'll have to try to take a picture of him when he does this - I'd love to see it.

My female kitty LOVES water. It's to the point where I have to put their water bowl in the bathrub because she splashes it around so much. I was tired of wet carpet, and when I tried the kitchen, water was on my linoleum so often that it was beginning to stain it yellow.

What we put up with for our fur-babies!

Maine Coons usually chirp/squeak instead of meow. The only time mine ever meowed was when they were scared (e.g. in the carrier in the car).

My Maine Coon Winston loves to get in between the two shower curtains (one fancy on outside the tub, one waterproof inside) and lap the drops of water WHILE I'M IN THE SHOWER. Yup. Loves it. If I don't let him in the bathroom while I"m in the shower, he cries at the door and bangs on it with his head and his paws. Even after I'm done, he wants to lap the water, but won't unless I pull the curtain closed so he can sit behind it while he drinks.

My other Coon Chester used to only drink water out of the bathroom sink. Since we didn't want to keep water in it all the time, we bought a water pik and kept that full instead. He never drank from the bowl by the food.

My other cat doesn't have a water fetish, but loves to chase her tail. You'd think after 12 years she would know..........

Our vet explained to us once that it's a natural thing. Running water is fresher, and less likely to contain impurities, bacteria, and other things that can make them ill, so they're hard-wired to seek out running water. Good to know our domesticated little kitties haven't completely lost the "call of the wild"!

Ours prefers running water, but will drink out of her bowl when necessary :) Always right as I put it down....then sparingly after that...

Our cat, Sadie, does this. Each morning she sits on the bathroom sink while I brush my teeth(She watches). After I finish, I leave the water running while I go make coffee. Usually by the time I get back to the bathroom, she is almost finished. Then she lays in the closet while I finish getting dressed. She will then follow me out the door, lay down on our black lab and I go to work.
She is the craziest cat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol About the vet thing. I guess that explains why my cat licks her lips every time she sees the water running and why she always joins me in the bathroom.

She won't jump in the tub though unless its empty (then licks up the puddles, ewww).

Cats are so weird lol.

Both of our cats do this. They will only drink out of the kitchen faucet and stand there and cry until you turn it on for them. Just wish I could teach them how to turn it off!!!

Thanks so much for the reassurance that it's normal behavior. I get a little nervous about that with him; we found him at a few days old under a bush, so his first few weeks, rather than being spent at his mother's breast and surrounded by siblings, were spent with a heating pad and a plastic bottle held by DH or myself. Sometimes I get so concerned that this abnormal behavior will affect him being a "normal" cat. Sounds like I can relax-thanks!

Glad to know my cat isn't the ONLY one that does this. :)

She also refuses to eat straight out of the bowl. Rumple will carefully pull ONE piece of kibble out of the bowl, play with it for a few moments and then eat it. It takes her an hour to finish ONE meal because she plays with her food so much.

All three of my guys do this. I also have to stop up the sink and run some water in it before I go to work, that is their "water bowl" upstairs.

Spoiled things, they are. ;)

My cat drinks from the bathtub faucet, she will sit there until you turn it on. When I lived in my other house she was an outside cat and drank out of the hose faucet, she is too old now to be outside.
