My Dr. prescribed this for me on Saturday - I was just wondering if anyone had any success with it.

I don't wish to start a debate about diet pills. I've been 20-30 lbs over weight my whole life, but am very healthy other wise. I work out 5-6 days a week for an hour at a time, I don't eat red meat, fried food, etc., I have a BP of 100/60 and a pulse of a runner. I just have a horrendous time losing weight. After joining WW and only losing 3 lbs over two months, (following it exactly) I asked my Dr. what was wrong. He suggested taking 1/2 pill a day for a month to try to 'jump start' my metabolism. He said that sometimes after a month on the pills people are able to continue losing on their own. (This is while staying on WW)

Has anyone been in the same boat? Does this seem to work?

I know of someone who has tried some form, I don't know the brand to do exactly what you are saying--get a start on things after a similar problem. With her doctor being in on things from the start, it has apparently worked for her and it has been a long-time success as I see. She continues to make those healthy choices and seems to be maintaining well now.

Let me know how it goes for you.

My dr. gave me some on Tuesday. She said it was a tool. I had to do the hard work and make life style changes. I'm to take them for 5 days and skip 2 days. She said this seems to work for most people. I lost 30 lbs last year and have put 13lbs back on. I had surgery in April and just fell back into old habits. And one of the biggest things I stopped doing was walking. I have 2 friends who have lost a lot of weight on this medication. I hate to use medication to lose weight, but I really need a jump start this time. So, I'll let everyone know how it's going. I need to lose about 40 lbs by Nov. 24. I think it can happen.

I started taking the meds on Sunday. (1/2 a pill a day) Sunday I was naseous, Monday I was tired, Tuesday I had an awful headache, Wednesday I had a stomach ache, but today I feel great. Even though I was taking the pill at 6:00 a.m and going to be at 10:30 p.m, I had trouble sleeping the first couple of days. I conked out last night without issue so that may be why I feel better today.

All in all, other then getting used to the medicine, the only side effects I have are 1) dry mouth (helps me get my water in), 2) sweating profusely when I work out (it's also been 90 degrees + all week) and 3) Peeing ALOT.

So far I've lost 4 lbs, which is a ton to me, so I hope it'll level off after the first week. I'm thrilled that it's working but want to do it as healthfully as I can. I only have another 20 or so lbs to lose, so it needs to slow down a bit.

I started taking them yesterday. So I've only taken 2. Last night was tuff. My dr. told me to take it as early as I could because for the first couple of days I'd probally have trouble sleeping. Last nite, the last time I looked at the clock it was 2am. I hope tonight is better. At least I finished Harry Potter last night! So I can't complain to much.

Yes, I started on June 24th with 1 pill a day but found that was too much so I cut back to 1/2. I take them for 5 days with 2 days off but the effects seem to last. They've really helped me 'kick start' and drink tons of water.

Since June 24th, I've lost 24 pounds! :)

The pills are NOT a miracle drug! You still need to make better choices. Right now I'm on 'low calorie' and trying to keep it under 1000 a day. The funny thing is most days I have to force myself to eat and rarely reach 1000 calories.

I've prescribed Adipex for many patients over the years. I've never taken it personally, so, I can't say much for its effects on a personal basis. I have noticed that some of my patients do very well with the medication, others complain that it doesn't do anything at all for them. It doesn't actually increase metabolism. Unfortunately, there is nothing that will increase metabolism in a clinically relevant way. Theoretically, the combination of caffeine and something like ephedra should, but doesn't in a statistically significant way. Adipex acts as a stimulant, and is distantly related to amphetamines on a chemical basis. It can make it difficult to sleep, and can increase blood pressure. I have a patient I am following now who does well with the medication; her blood pressure off the med is normal, but is borderline high on the medication. Unfortunately, she has difficulty even maintaining her weight off the medication, so, she is on it for now.

I usually start my patients on the lowest dose of the generic active ingredient in Adipex, which is phentermine. This is 15mg. If the patient wants the higher dose at one month follow-up, I will prescribe it for them, but, only if they have lost some weight with the medication.
