My 2 yo DD began vomiting Sunday am. She was sick 19 times. Took her to the doctor Monday afternoon, and they put her in the hospital for dehydration. We got to come home this morning, but she is still not eating or drinking hardly anything. She has been sick three times since we got home. If your child has had it, how long did it last? I am so scared she will get dehydrated again. The IV was awful.:(

My DD had this two weeks ago and my nephew had this last week. The virus lasted 7 days for both kids. Just remember to give your child 2 TBS of gator aid every half hour. You can also get an over the counter medicine that will help the nausea. I use Emetrol and it helped my daughter to stay hydrated.

My younger son had it when he was 2 months old and scared the living daylights out of us. He vomited and had diarrhea constantly. Luckily, he did not dehydrate, but we did spend quality time in the ER. If I remember correctly, it lasted about a week.
Hope your little one is feeling better!

My youngest had it when she was about 6mths. Spent her 1st christmas in the hospital. She just had diarrhea but just couldn't keep enough liquids in her. It was awful, about 3x every hour. They told me in the ER that after they got fluids in her we could take her home but that we might need to come back and get another IV. I opted to stay there, I wasn't going to chance having to redo the IV. The diarrhea got better but she was put on a restricted diet after that it took about a month for her to be completely recovered.

I'm suprised that they let her go home if she was still vomiting, just keep a close eye on her. My oldest was hospitalized twice for dydration and they wouldn't let her leave until she'd gone without vomiting 24 hrs, they also measured everything that came in and out.

She had not vomited for more than 24 hours when she was discharged, but she was not eating or drinking anything to speak of. She is getting sick after eating, but she hasn't had solid food since Saturday.

Hopefully the worst is over, just give her small amounts frequently. I wouldnt' worry about her eating as long as she's drinking. With my older DD they stopped everything by mouth for about 24 hours started giving her a few teaspoons of liquid and then worked up to jello then regular food. She was older, about 3 and probably didn't have rotavirus so once they stopped the vomitting and got her hydrated she recovered quickly.

It is pretty scary stuff, I hope she's able to get better without another IV. Poor baby :(

edited to add: With my DD that had rotavirus the diet they said to use is BRAT - A bland diet consisting of ripe Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. Because of her age she went back to formula and rice cereal only for quite a while.

My son had this when he was 2. It was awful. He was admitted to the hospital and received IV fluids for a few days. His twin had it as well, but she didn't dehydrate like him.

I thought it was beyond horrible. Our house smelled so badly of vomit--At 2 years of age, children don't understand about throwing up in a garbage can. We were so concerned with their health, we didn't care where they were throwing up. We just had the carpets cleaned after they were feeling better :-)

Push small (1 TB) of fluid every half an hour. Or have your child suck on a popsicle/suck on icecubes. If concerned call your MD back. My son was in the hospital for 3 days with IV's. They were going to send him home after day 2 but as we were getting discharged he started vomitting again. So he stayed hooked up to his IV. The RN was just starting to turn off the IV as he was vomitting. Thank God she didn't DC it as he was a hard stick. He had the bad stool for awhile. It takes weeks before they are back to normal. Good luck.

its really nasty when young kids have this kind of stuff. when im in the hospital for 1 reason or another and c this stuff, i feel horrible for the kid. they look so badd like that.

It lasts anywhere from 3 -9 days. It is very contagious and be aware that even when the child is better, they can still be contagious. The virus is shed in the stool for a couple of weeks, I believe. It can live for hours on your hands and for 10 days on a hard surface (like the bathroom countertop) and for even longer on a wet surface. So be really diligent about frequent handwashing.

I hope your dd doesn't get dehydrated again. As others have said, don't worry so much about her eating as long as she will drink something. Try getting her to take a few sips every hour.

Pixie dust for you!

Boy it is going around... my girls had it last week and the 2 year old ended up in the hospital, like yours, she had it for 7days and she really didn't eat anything for awhile. Then she started slowly with the BRAT diet and saltines, popsicles... and drank sprite and gadorade.

Good Luck, it is awful.

well i'm not a child, but i had it about a month ago and had to go to the hospital and get an iv b/c i could even keep the tbsp of water every 5 minutes down. it was horrible, but at least it was over in a couple of days.

it does seem to be going around, several people i know have had it.
