Anyone work in Retail. Have your work hours pick up yet.

Is they still cutting hours a work place.

I am trying to figure out when my hours is stop being cut in Retail. When is my hours in increase.

Is it normal in Retail for them to cut hours Jan., Feb. March and April.

Do it pick up in May and go though December.

I hope that makes sense.

I think it depends where you work. For us, it picked up recently due to summer clothes buying season for kids (I work at Gymboree). The summer REALLY slumps and we won't see another pick up until it comes time for school shopping in July/August. Then it stays up until December. January through spring then stink again.

My DH worked 3 years for our local Wal-Mart. They heavily cut hours in January and February especially. His hours were never cut because of his position, but other people had theirs cut.

My DD works in the accounting office at Wal-Mart and her hours don't get cut either.

I don't think it's right when you are hired for 40 hours a week and sometimes they cut them. Not right at all.

Thanks for offer your opionions. That makes feel better now. Better about the situation now.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but....

Mosmom I have wondered if you worked at gymboree...from your pics.
I work there too...I have for ummm 12 years!!!! I started in college as a part time asst, then went to full time, then had kids and went back to part time and now I am a stock person.
I really like doing stock after working the floor for SO long, I had just lost all patience with some of the silly things people say and do.
Anyway, HI from a fellow gymboreeer!!!!!:wave2:

At The Gap hour were low and seasonal help was gone from February until August - then it picked up for back to school, then again around Thanksgiving. I would guess that is about the same for most mall retail...

I work at Bath and Body Works and we are busy during holidays. I am not sure if anyone buys anything there other than holidays... its the place people go when they're not sure what to get someone, and the products usually last until the next holiday when you purchase it again for them =) Did that make sense, LOL?!

Christmas was a ZOO, hours went up with our Semi-Annual sale, then for Vday. Its dead right now, but I'm told MOthers Day will bring more hours. Then I'm told we go back down until our next sale...

Gotta love retail =)

It is normal for our store to cut hours somewhat after Christmas, but not much as we have inventory in mid-January. February is the worst. By March business usually picks up, but it's still slow. The shift in Easter has had some impact (it was a week earlier this year than last). I'm training a new clerical in my office, she was working in the jewelry dept. and said they had just cut back her time again last week.

Hopefully as weather conditions improve (get warmer) folks will find a need to go shopping for clothing. I recently heard the clothing sales are down everywhere because so many people are putting money in to fixing up their homes instead. :confused3

I used to work in the accounting office at a Wal-Mart in Michigan....oh those were the days...I miss it.

Anyways.....our hours would get cut around the beginning of the year but we were in an area that had alot of vacationers during the summer so they would go up again around April or May. It depends alot on where your at and what your seasons are like.

We have very few people working right now. During Christmas and holidays we have a lot, but not at the moment.
