Anyone with Auto Train Experience

All booked!!! we will be returning from FL via the AutoTrain. July 4th- maybe hubby and I will be able to view some fireworks after putting the boys to bed.

Just made our reservations. 2 adults, 1 child, 1 infant, oversized car, family bedroom. Got a AAA discount (~$30)...and some other discount that appeared (about $125) -- not sure where it came from. I didn't put in a code and I didn't see anything advertized. I will still look for kids ride free before we head out.

How closely does Amtrak check vehicle size, when checking in cars for the auto train? I have a small SUV, and according to Amtrak’s web site it qualifies as a “regular vehicle”, but literally by less than an inch, if my owner's manual demission’s are correct.

At check-in, is there any danger they will decide my car is too large, and not allow us to board? I’d prefer not to pay the extra fee for an oversized vehicle if I can avoid it, but I’m very worried about how they measure the cars, and what happens if they decide my car is considered oversized. If the worst they will do is charge me an additional fee for an oversized vehicle, I can handle that, but if there's any chance I could be turned away, I might consider paying the oversized fee for the peace of mind.

Does anyone have experience with this?
