I am 29 years old and I have been struggling with hip issues for a past few years. I have have some pretty decent arthritis in my left hip caused by impingement. I had surgery in May to correct a labrum tear and shave down some of the extra bone and inflammation in the joint, but my doctor said my hip isn't doing to good. He think I'll probably need a hip replacement in the next 10 years.

I just went to Disney last month and my hip is still a little achy from the surgery. I had a little bit of trouble getting in and out of some rides like test track, space mountain ect. I was just wondering how people with hip replacements fair in Disney. Are there any limits that you have or your doctor suggested? I know I have some time, but I'm just curious.

I was told I might need surgery on my left hip when I was 40 yrs old. I did have surgery on my right hip when I was 58 yrs old.:confused3 About three Disney trips ago I had to face the fact that I needed a wheelchair because I could no longer stand or walk for that length of time. I have problems on some rides that when you sit your knees are a bit higher then your waist or the step down into the ride is too deep. Getting on and off continues moving rides is tricky. I do use a cane and I have a lot of other arthritis problems, so it just might be me. After recovering from surgery and the limitations I had to follow my doctor gave me the go ahead to do whatever I was comfortable with. Hope all things go well for you. Disney does go all the way to make people with physical problems able to be apart of the fun and the magic. :goodvibes

I had a total Hip replacement 6 years ago (I am know 42). I have been to disney every year (including the year I had my surgery) since then. The only rides I really have to avoid is tower of terror and any water rides, most rides at the water parks). I still have a bit of trouble getting in and out of rides but nothing that is really major. I do carry a colapsable cane with me just incase i get tired and my hip gets a bit sore. Other than than that no restrictions from my doctor.

That is exactly what I was just diagnosed with after a contrast MRI-labral tear with impingement and early arthritis. The dr said I would need arthroscopic surgery ti fix the tear and he would also shave the bone but I have not scheduled it yet. How was the surgery and the recuperation time? He also said I would need a hip replacement in about ten years. (I am 39.)

Thanks for all the info!

disneyloveNY: the surgery wasn't too bad. It was only a few hours and I was home that afternoon. The one bad part about surgery day was that my left leg was completely numb and it was like dead weight and I had a hard time getting myself to the bathroom and stuff. So I did require a little help. After I got off the crutches, 2 weeks after surgery, I felt great! I was able to do just about everything. Then about a month and a half after surgery I started to get achy in the hip again, which my doctor said is completely normal. Apparently you go through a "honeymoon" stage and it feels great, then you get some pain for a few more months, and then you feel good again. So he did assure me that I will feel better by the end of the year, but it does feel better than it did before surgery. I did well on my recent Disney trip a couple weeks ago. I did have to slow down at the end of the day, but I was able to walk all the parks and ride everything I wanted to without too much pain or stiffness.

Since a new hip is in my future someday (first I need a new kidney ) can I ask why Tower of Terror and water rides are off limits now? The only thing I can see happening on Tower of Terror is you come up out of your seat - but I would think a ride like Dinosaur or even the Safari would be worse since it bounces you out of the seat instead of you just floating out.

I was born with hip displasia. When I was between 1st & 2nd grade they did surgery where they went in, broke my thigh bone so the could move the ball down into where my hip socket should be. Unfortunately, I did not have enough of a socket to hold it in place and it has slipped back out. I was told when I "quit growing" I could have a hip replacement. Well, I am 44 and quit growing a long time ago. A year or so ago I went to surgeon to see if it was time to do anything. It still functions and isn't painful on a regular basis so he wasn't too excited about doing anything with it just yet. I am also on "the list" waiting to recieve a kidney transplant. I was afraid if I received a kidney I would be unable to have hip replacement later. I was assured that while I should not have them back to back, that even post-kidney transplant I would be able to someday have my hip replaced. I am hoping, thought, that once I receive a kidney, that the extra weight I have from the peritoneal dialysis will come off and maybe some of the aches I have in my hip and back will lessen and I will be able to put off the new hip even longer.

You sound very similar to me to. I was born with hip displasa as well. However I had my first hip operation when i was 18mths old. I didnt have the ball or a socket. Not sure what they actaully did, but it lasted lasted till i was 27 and they ended up doing a bi-polar hip replacement. Then at 35 they had no choice but to do a complete hip replacement.

In regards to Disney. Dont sure the exact reason for not going on tower of terrow other than the jarring that occurs. (have never been on it) On our first trip my DH and DS would go on the rides first then give me a yes or no if I should do it. That was only only ride that worried them both. The ride in Ak is mainly the one I avoid because since your in cloths they get wet and and heavy. With the weight and dampnest of the cloths, it really starts seizing up my hip making it very painful to walk untill the cloths dry. Since then I have not rode it again. I do go on splash mountain in Mk but I put a rain coat over my hip so it stays dry and i dont have any problems. As for the water rides. I find since your not in a seat and you are going down just on a mat your have a tendancy to bounce around causing the hip to get irritatied by hitting the walls. This might not affect everyone the same way. Its just my experince.

Thanks!I do think I'm going to have the surgery sooner rather than later since the pain is keeping me up at night and on my last trip to Disneyworld I was in agony most of the time just walking around-although it ceratinly did not stop me :goodvibes
