Anyone who sells Tupperware or Pampered Chef? A somewhat ethical question...

I was having a discussion with a friend the other day and we got into a disagreement. For both Tupperware and Pampered Chef, there are "starter kits" to become a consultant. These are both relatively cheap prices (Tupperware's is cheaper I believe) for a good amount of products. What stops someone from ordering the starter kit to be a consultant, but not actually becoming one? We are both college students and were talking about all of the things we needed/didn't have. She argued it would be a good idea to sign up for the kit and then only do a couple or even no parties. I didn't think this was really right or possible? Is this possible to do? I would really like to prove her wrong...

I don't know if it's possible or not, but I know you can get what you need without doing that and probably for a lot less.

I'm a consultant for another direct sales company and yes, you can order the kit and then not sell anything.

I call that "kit - napping". I have had a lot of people do that - sign up under me, get the kit and I never hear from them again. They don't admit that's what they've done, but I know it is, lol.

Years later and many, many, many Pampered Chef products later - I believe I own 75% of the catalog I thought to myself - this was dumb!! I could have signed up, had a few parties and saved soooo much money!!

I have sold Home Interior and Tupperware in the past. Not for a several years though so things may have totally changed. Did you price out what the items you want in the starter kit from the catalog and what you could get for being a hostess of a party vs. getting the kit? Is it worth it since when I was in it the starter kit included brochures, bags, etc. you wouldn't need if you weren't interested in really "doing" the business. I know a lot has changed. For instance, when I worked for Home Interior we got a shipment in once a week and then had to sort everything out and bag it with the proper order and then deliver it. Not bad if you only have one delivery but there were backorders all the time and since they didn't have to pay up front (then) some people hadn't paid the hostess yet. These things meant I had to make multiple deliveries (time and gas) to get the follow ups to the hostess. Ate any profits quickly. BUT, this was like 10 years ago and I hear they have lots better systems for independent salespeople so I am not knocking it or trying to discourage anyone. Just showing how times have changed.

Discovery Toys encourages you to do that. There's nothing wrong with asking a rep if it's okay to do it. You could even buy stuff for your family and friends at a discount periodically.

Yep, not a problem. I did Discovery Toys for awhile and the person above me sold a starter kit to her mom for that very reason. You basically get a set of toys (and good ones too) for 50% off, plus you get a discount on anything you buy in the future.
