What a rip that the Brazilian was grabbed and taken off the road by the nutty spectator. Could you imagine if that had happend to a runner from just about any other nation there would be serious outcry for the race to be rerun or that he also get the gold medal. What a shame but he still seemed genuinly proud of his Bronze medal.

Unfortunately, the rerunning of a marathon is not going to happen.

Didn't Brazil lodge some sort of protest after the race and request a Gold be awarded to it's runner because of this. Yes, he seemed elated that he did finish and get the Bronze but may now have thought he deserved more (what else is new). Too bad this had to happen. It could have been much worse though.

I did hear this nut who ran out and grabbed the runner once ran out into the middle of a NASCAR type race too.

No the Brazilian runner did not ask for anything he accepted the bronze graciously unlike what others may have done I am sure. His country also did not request anything be done either. They were saying it is well within his right to request a re running of the race and it would be granted but to this point he has not asked for this. He was also awarded a special sportsmanship award which I thought was a very nice touch on the part of the IOC he does deserve better but it will never happen unlesds he requests it.

When it first happened I have to admit that I thought it's a shame it isn't like a car race - where a yellow flag would have been put out...to kind of hold his place. You know?

It was extremely unfortunate for him. I thought they might award him a 2nd gold because of it...but he was out in front for quite a while & marathoners rarely finish first in that situation...although it has happened at least once.

I thought it was really nice that he was thrilled to finish third! Talk about "Olympic Spirit"!! :teeth:

Marathoner Finishes Third After Attack

ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- A defrocked Irish priest bolted from the crowd and grabbed the marathon leader about three miles from the finish Sunday. The Brazilian runner wound up with the bronze - and a special award for sportsmanship - and the former priest was arrested. But Brazil's track federation will appeal.
Cornelius Horan, 57, was wearing a green beret, a red kilt and knee-high green socks when he attacked Brazilian runner Vanderlei de Lima, knocking him into the crowd. De Lima was able to recover and finish, but was passed by two runners about a mile after the incident.
"I was scared, because I didn't know what could happen to me, whether he was armed with a knife, a revolver or something and whether he was going to kill me," de Lima said.
"I don't know if I would have won, but things would have been different," he said. "After that, it was hard to get my rhythm back. It really distracted me."
The Brazilian track federation protested the result and sought a duplicate gold medal for de Lima, but while the jurors expressed sympathy, they said they couldn't change the result. Brazil said it would appeal to sports' international arbitration panel.
"I'm not going to cry forever about the incident, although it broke my concentration," de Lima said, "but I managed to finish and the bronze medal in such a difficult marathon is also a great achievement."
The International Olympic Committee said it would present de Lima with its Pierre de Coubertin medal in recognition of his "exceptional demonstration of fair play and Olympic values."
"I think the Olympic spirit prevailed and I prevailed. I was able to show that determination wins races," de Lima said after receiving his bronze medal at the Olympics' closing ceremony.
"What prevailed here was the Olympic spirit. Never mind the result of the appeal. I'm very happy to have won this medal."
Athens police sources identified the intruder as Cornelius Horan, who has been barred from practicing as a priest for the past decade. He once published a book called "A glorious new world very soon to come" that predicted the world was about to end.
The attacker Sunday night had a piece of paper attached to his back bearing the message: "The Grand Prix Priest Israel Fulfillment of Prophecy Says the Bible."
In July 2003, Horan, in a costume similar to Sunday's, ran onto the track at the British Grand Prix in the middle of the race and stayed there for more than 20 seconds, forcing Formula One racers traveling at more than 200 mph to swerve around him. He was carrying a sign that said: "Read the Bible - the Bible is always right."
British authorities said Horan also attempted a protest on Wimbledon's Center Court during a rain break, and tried to disrupt cricket and rugby matches.
On Sunday, Horan jumped from the crowd, ran across the street and grabbed de Lima. A policeman following the leader on a bicycle jumped off and helped free the Brazilian.
De Lima, whose once-large lead had been slowly shrinking, was able to get back into the race. But he lost several seconds as a result of the attack, and eventually was overtaken by Stefano Baldini of Italy and Mebrahtom Keflezighi of the United States. De Lima finished third.
When the incident occurred, dozens of flag-waving Brazilian fans at the stadium that marked the marathon's end were watching the front-runners on a giant screen. They suddenly went silent and the huge crowd gasped.
The police sources said Horan arrived in Athens just before dawn Sunday aboard a British Airways flight. They said Horan apparently acted because he believed that Christian Judgment Day was coming.
Horan would be taken to a prosecutor on Monday, the sources said. It was unclear if he would be charged or remanded for psychiatric evaluation.
On Aug. 16, a Canadian man wearing tights and a tutu jumped into the Olympic diving pool after a competition. He was convicted of interrupting the games and sentenced to five months in prison, although he remains free pending appeal.

It was a shocking incident and the athlete is incredible to have continued the run and have such a wonderful attitude after the race! He really showed outstanding courage and determination.

It was actually spectators who helped pull this crazed man off the athlete before the policeman got to him. Thank goodness he was not armed.

I remember too well this guy running onto the Grand Prix circuit and not only endangering his own life but those of the drivers, officials and spectators - I do not know what action was taken but it is a pity that he wasn't ordered to have some sort of psychiatric treatment after that.

I never saw the policeman help him. I was asking, "Where's the policeman?" The crowd seemed to be the ones to help. It was scarey, shocking and sad. He was a trooper though! I thought he was amazing as he ran in the arena. The crowd cheering him on and his reaction was wonderful! I'm sorry the incident happened & I hope they do something with the crazy guy. The runner was lucky. That man could have really hurt him.
If anyone hears more about the follow up, please post it.

I remember telling my sister that it was probably a bigwig from NBC making sure they got the last bit of ratings on this otherwise lackluster Olympics...

But an Austrian swimmer gave his to an US-athlete.

That was no "defrocked priest". . that was John Ashcroft in drag making sure someone from the "Coalition of the Willing" won the race. . .

Wouldn't that mean the American who came second would have to give up his silver for a bronze?

As far as "giving up" medals I think it was looking certain the Italian and American would catch the Brazilian anyway. Maybe the attack on the Brazilian made that happen a little quicker, but I think the result as it finished was the most likely result anyway. The award they made to him was a nice gesture, IMHO. If anything that award is rarer and probably more valuable than a regular "gold" medal.

I have a feeling the attacker is going to get a pretty decent stretch of jail time, that guy needs some serious help, but he needs to be kept away from sporting events, because sooner or later someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed because of him.

Reference, please?

Didn't you have broadcast from the Olympics in the USA:confused: Or was it the typical America-only biased reporting you're so used to:rolleyes:

In one of the swim events the American swimmer was disqualified because one of the judges ruled that he had made a mistake during one of the turns. He obviously started stroking a bit too early before having completed the turn, which is against the rules. The Austrian who finished second stated the he did not want to win the Gold this way and the American would have won anyway. So he asked the judges to reconsider their ruling, what they did.
Some people just have style and know what fairness is about.

Event: 200m backstroke
American: Aaron Peirsol
Austrian: Markus Rogan
