Anyone watch "The Cove"

I don't really want to get re-involved in this discussion, but I'd like to point out that the Pilot Whale permit mentioned a few pages back does say that the whale is coming from Kamogawa.

"...notice was published in the Federal Register (74 FR 63119) that a request for a public display permit to import one male pilot whale, from the Kamogawa SeaWorld, Chiba, Japan to Sea World of California, had been submitted by the above-named organization."

OK... I've read the entire thread. I've watched "The Cove." I was disturbed by it, as are many others. It appears as though drive fishing is to dolphins what puppy mills are to dogs -- both are appalling.

Question, though, for ChicagoFitnessClub, DisneyRockstar and julieannbabe -- and I ask you three specifically, because you are so outspoken and vehement about your positions. You talk a great game and yell at a lot of people, but seldom note anything positive (other than not buying tickets to SeaWorld) that one can do to improve the situation.

The question ... what do you do to help stop this situation that you so vehemently rail against? I ask because there are people I know who have seen The Cove who are now spurred to action, but they have no idea where best to focus their efforts. Do you donate money? Do you attend rallies? Do you write to government agencies? Do you organize protests?

I'm not looking for a general, "Look on the internet -- there's plenty of stuff" or "stop going to SeaWorld". I'm looking for those things that those of you who are knowledgeable and passionate about the cause are actually doing -- those things with which you have experience -- so that I can pass along those examples to others of reputable organizations or activities that will help. No one wants to focus their efforts on a cause only to find out that their money is being misused or their time is supporting a one-sided vendetta. So I ask those of you who seem to have experience. It's one thing to argue on a message board, but what have you actually found out there in the real world to help?

Thanks for any insight.

Hello WDSearcher,

I want to start out by thanking you for asking me a very great and insightful question :).

I first saw The Cove in April 2010. Yes I was shocked when I saw the climax of the film. But the whole movie has proved that this can be stopped. Richard O'Barry said, "if they find out what goes on here, we will be shut down". At the end of the movie they had a web link on how to find out more and how to help. There I was able to get more information and me, along with another friend who saw the movie, are spreading the word about this cause in our schools.

Of course it's hard to spread the word with such a horrific truth going on right now. It's hard to just bring something like that up in a conversation. The first time I tried to tell someone about it, I ended up leaving her in a confusion and fear. It's hard to bring up a gory situation.

So after the first failed attempt. I decided to just tell people to watch this movie called "The Cove". They end up seeing it at some point in their life and they realize what i'm thinking. I remember when The Cove premiered on Animal Planet back in August. This was an excellent opportunity to round up my family together to watch this movie. It was a real eye opener for them, especially my Grandma. By showing the movie to people, it's by far the best way to educate them about the Real Truth.

I also try to steer my classmates away from buying that SeaWorld ticket by telling them other great alternatives (E.g, Disney, Universal Studios). It's another working advice I give to friends and educate them about why animals belong in the wild and not doing tricks for food in captivity. It's pretty hard for this one girl, because she has it in her mind that the animals are pets and have to be fed by humans. When I asked her why SeaWorld animals don't belong in the wild, she told me, "Who is gonna feed them?":sad2:. I feel really bad she has the wrong idea.

I have participated in the recent petition by the makers of The Cove which was signed by over 1.7 million signatures from 151 countries. The petition has been sent to the Japanese government. I had over 200 of my friends on Facebook sign the petition along with me so this issue is spreading and more and more people around the world are getting involved.

I plan not to stop supporting the cause. The video from the Taiji slaughter on The Cove is tattooed on my mind forever. It never goes away. It needs to stop for the good of the animals, and the people who may come in contact with the high amounts of mercury in the dolphin meat. Dolphin meat is not considered a delicacy in Japan. I support the Humane Society for the United States and I am not ever attending a Dolphin park or a Swim-With-Dolphins Program. Animals do not apply to be theme park entertainers, they are simply selected transported and put in a artificial pool. It is not their natural environment and captivity shortens the lifespan of the animals. The best replicated natural environment for dolphins and whales is THE WILD. We are the world. We can all end the dolphin slaughter. Thank you for reading my answer. Until next time, take care of yourselves, and each other.

Sincerely,
Josh
