Anyone watch "The Cove"

you are more offended at me calling someone ignorant than the picture i posted of the captured whales?

it says it all really.

I'm not offended. I was just pointing out that when you resort to calling names, you look foolish and people tend not to listen to fools.

so i can't call someone ignorant for saying that captivity is okay and seaworld don't have wild creatures there but its okay for you to call me a fool for being anti captivity/pro freedom? - lol. okay then!

you don't want to 'listen' to me but 'listen' to the picture that i posted of lolita and 3 other members of her family being captured, having explosives go off all around them so it would make them easier to be captured then ripped apart from the remaining 'free' members of their family THEN taken to a marine park so they would be trained up to entertain paying fools. yes capitivity sure looks appealing to lolita doesn't it?

here it is again for you. take a real good look at it. you looking?

Not ONE of you have commented on that picture. why do you think that is? if you ignore that picture - will it go away?

because you all know that you can't defend that picture.

jrmasm - does that picture get my point across? what do you think? ignore my words - just look at that picture.

whatever words i post - you can disagree with me - but a picture speaks a thousand words doesn't it?

i rest my case.

end of.

First, you have no idea how I feel about this issue.

Second, take a deep breath and read what I said. Calling people names will never help your cause. You can disagree with someone with that.

Third, the picture? I might have something to say had it been taken on Aug 8, 2010. But it was taken on 1970 so no, I have nothing to say about it.

eta: I never callled you a fool. I said your actions were foolish. Your actions being the name calling. That has nothing to do with your position on the issue of animals in captivity. Really. Go back and read.

It is sad to think that many of the first whales were caputured but Sea World does not do that anymore and to blame them for taking in an animal that was caputured years ago by another compnay is wrong. They had no control over what that comapny did and all they are doing with the animal is trying to give it a good home since releasing the animal could be dangerous.

My question is what do you think should be done with these animals that have been living in capitivty or born in captivity for all of their lives? With having no skills to survive in the wild how could Sea World or any marine park release them back into the wild?

Now I will say that I am against keeping an animal in dirty or health damaging consitions, but from what I have seen at Sea World the animals are well taken care of anf have clean areas to live.

Release them into the ocean. 1 year of ocean life >>>>>>>>>>>> 20 years of captivity in a tiny glass bowl.

But how can they be released if most of them have lived in captivity all of their lives? How will they survive? And what makes you think it will work? These are honest questions I have as I too have thought and struggled in the past with keeping any animal in captivity.

They'll figure it out, they're smart creatures. And they will be much happier, I can promise you that.

"They'll figure it out" :confused3 That is what your answer is for releasing them back into the ocean? What happens if they do not "figure it out"? Do we just release them and let them die?

You can tag them and monitor them for a certain period of time to see how they adapt. If they have problems, we'll deal with it at that point.

OK. This is going way too far. I understand DCLMan is having opposite opinions from the majority of the posters in this thread (i.e. supporting dolphin and whale capture and captivity). For julieannbabe, you should not use name calling, because then you just lose the game. Ric O Barry and his team are using non violent and peaceful tactics to end the dolphin slaughter. If DCLMan is against a good cause, it isn't wise to antagonize him because that would only keep him away from this issue, and now he says he has left this thread, which actually happened.

As for ChicagoFitnessClub who says "They [the whales and dolphins] will figure it out, they're smart creatures." Truth is, the whales and dolphins would not figure it out the minute they go in the ocean. They have to be transferred from the dolphinarium to a sea pen to be rehabilitated and be checked and taught how to live in the wild again.

Just because they were born in captivity, doesn't mean it's ok to have them live in a chlorinated artificial concrete pool and be forced to do tricks for dead fish.

Dolphins do not belong in captivity. There is no such thing as good captivity. All dolphins lived in the wild since the beginning of time. With the world's realization of this wrongdoing of capturing dolphins and making them do tricks for food and the fact that Dolphins are WILD ANIMALS, not pets, there can't be a bright future ahead for the dolphins spending their life in a small pool. Unless we band together to end it.

It's not about opinion, or culture. It's about fact. And common sense.

I think you meant to say "there can't be a bright future ahead for dolphins spending their life in a small pool.

I edited my typo.

you are the first person to say something half sensible on here.

thank you.

Im not going to hold a grudge about something that happened in the 1970s just like Im not going to take any notice from a person who thinks only SOME captivity is wrong

tell me what you see in the picture.

the above picture doesn't move you at all?
you have no emotion over that picture?

so you are not moved with the picture but i bet you get all teared up with happiness when the whales are doing their show at the marine parks?

man - we are in trouble. or should i say the captive whales/dolphins are.

again - you don't are getting it all wrong - it doesn't matter WHO captured these whales - they shouldn't have been captured in the first place.

no you put them in sea pens - it will take time and perhaps too much money so the marine parks probably won't do that as they also wouldn't make any money on the come back.

however if they ever did decide to release them it would take months of hard work - but the trainers at the marine parks spent months training the whales/dolphins to do tricks so they can work on getting them ready for the wild.

how great would that be?

tilly will never be released - they want him for breeding purposes but they just use the 'he been in capitivity too long' line. :sad1:

I want to come and live in your fluffy world!
