Anyone watch "The Cove"

yes. it changed me too.

i have been to seaworld three times. i don't want to discuss the killing in 'the cove'- that is bad but for me which i found harder to digest is that when i was watching the whales/dolphins performing tricks i didn't even think how they were made to do that.

i just thought that they enjoyed it.
how stupid was i?
(i never knew all the background to it)

just do a google search on dolphin swims and you will find out about their life in captivity.

now watching these whales/dolphins on youtube doing these tricks with all that loud music for our entertainment - it is perverse.

i don't want to get into arguments with people - but the bottom line - a tank in a marine park can't be compared to their natural habitat - the ocean.

i don't think the dolphins in 'the cove' are bought by seaworld - but for me that isn't the issue here: dolphins/whales should not be kept in captivity. full stop.

my boss who is older than me went to seaworld on a press trip in 1988.
she said that while watching shaumu do the show - tears were streaming down her face - she knew that it was wrong.
her and other journalists went backstage and were allowed to ask questions to the trainers.
One journalist asked a sensible question : what happens when whales migrate? how do they provide that for the whales at seaworld?

the trainers looked at the PR woman and the group were asked to leave - they wouldn't answer his question. :sad2:

i do hope and believe that maybe in 10/20 years time people will get more educated about life in captivity and maybe these marine parks will close. but at the end of the day it all about $$$$$.

the show literally sickened me as i was totally clueless.

if you re-watch the show, you will see that they do supply dolphins to Seaworld as that is discussed and the sign at the entrance to Discovery cove is shown.

i just saw this how about a week or so ago long after i made our reservations at Discovery Cove. after we visit Discovery Cove this time around, we will never go back to SeaWorld or Discovery Cove again.

not that one family will make a difference BUT as i said i was sickened by what really goes on and due to this we will not be able to support such abuse ever again.

my heart is broken that i supported them this time around.

i believe "The Cove" is being shown as a series about this issue is going to be on soon or is on now. "The Cove" is currently available to
"Play" on Netflix.

I saw this post, and was about to ask about DC. We currently have it booked for our honeymoon, with theDolphin swim. My sis is VERY passionate about this cause, and recently watched the Cove. I have not watched it, and am afraid to.....I plan to cancel the DC tickets, and might not even go to SW now... :sad2:

i have always wanted to swim with a dolphin - if i hadn't watched 'the cove' then i would have done at some point.

now i know that i can't.

maybe watch 'the cove' then you can make up your own mind - so you will be informed when you make your decision.
i am not talking about the ending - we all know that part is horrific but just the part about marine parks - how they get the dolphins to perform and the stress that they get by being in capitivity. then you can decide if you want to visit seaworld.

seaworld probably look after the whales/dolphins very well but the fundamental fact is that they shouldn't be in capitivity performing for us.

one family does make a difference. well done.

people need to be educated about whales/dolphins in capitivity.

dolphins in a way are cursed with their 'smiley' faces - even if they are in pain or stressed they still look happy. maybe that is part of the reason why we think it is okay to put them in a tank in a marine park.

for me it doesn't matter if japan 'supply' the dolphins or not - i say japan but it is only 26 fisherman doing this, all these dolphins even the ones bred in capitivity all go back to the same old fact that they were captured in the first place and ripped apart from their family. it all goes back to that in the end.

at least in my mind by me not going to those parks after this visit that is locked in i'll have peace of mind that i don't support it anylonger now that i am more educated.

before they set "The Cove" to play on Netflix, I checked it out for my DH to watch, this was after I sat there crying telling him about the horrors of what they do to the highly intelligent/beautiful/loving dolphins. the movie sat there for days and i asked him why he had not watched it and he said based on what i said he just can't. i was very graphic about what the show showed.

if we could i would cancel our reservations and get our money back but we are going this weekend so it's a no go. the best i can do on our swim is to love the dolphin that we get to be with. i'm going to tell him/her that i love him/her and that i am sorry he has to live like this. i will whisper it to him/her.

i wish i could join the man who made "The Cove" in his quest to stop all of this but due to being handicapped I can hardly walk and due to being handicapped I do not have a job.

if i had known about this prior to making my reservations, i would have donated the money i spent on these expensive tickets to their cause rather than using the money for entertainment.

i know this is different but i heard on cnn just now that a lion attacked a trainer in Las Vegas, apparently he was being kept behind glass for show? that is just as wrong as the dolphins being held captive outside of their natural habitat.

I feel odd saying this as we are going just because I watched the movie recently and could not cancel my reservation and get my money back and as you know it is a substantial amt. of money esp. for 4 people.

I'd say please do not support this, please listen to your sister, she is correct. If I had a clue prior to watching the movie, there is no way I would have gone, I would have given the money to the man for his cause.

Interestingly enough, due to the lion attacking his trainer in Las Vegas, they are bringing up Seaworld and other places that use animals for entertainment and how dangerous this is.

I am sickened that I supported this by buying tickets.

We are going on our first Disney Cruise in November. I was planning to swim with the dolphins...but then I saw The Cove! I couldn't sleep for days! You better believe I'm done supporting the dolphin/whale industry! I stopped going to circuses decades ago because of a video I saw of elephants being mistreated! What is hard for me, though, is knowing Sea World does so much good! They educate, rehabilitate and don't use captive animals anymore. (They made a statement that they stopped that over 20 years ago) I haven't been to Sea World since my teens were babies but I was planning on taking them one more time! Oh well, they've survived a childhood without circuses so I guess they can survive not going to Sea World, too! I hope and pray the killings in Japan stop soon!!!

I am confused. If Sea World stopped using captive animals over 20 years ago and now rescues animals, why would you not go to Sea World?

Per "The Cove", the statement of them having stopped using captive animals over 20 years ago more than likely is not true unless all of the ones they had that were initially captured procreated and maybe Seaworld is trying to make themselves look good by saying that the Dolphins they have were born in captivity which is nothing more than mis-leading the public.

Or maybe Sea World is actually doing a good thing working to save animals. May I ask the last time you visted Sea World? Are you familar with the animals who are working with the disabled? Are you familar with the animals who have been rescued and now live at Sea World as they would not be able to survive in the wild? Do you know the trainers and have you spoken with them? Have you gone along on an animal rescue? Have you seen the manatees that live at Sea World after being injured by humans?

I'm sorry, I guess I wasn't very clear. I was naming all the good things about Sea World and why my decision is so hard! I want to go to Sea World and support all the good things they are doing but I also don't want to support an industry that might be encouraging the capture and slaughter of dolphins! I love Sea World and I love dolphins and right now I'm trying to decide if the two conflict!

I understand :). Given the amount of time I spend at SW it is an easier choice for me. Please let me know if I can help you choose:fish:

We were at Sea World in Apr 2009, before that in Dec 2008, and several times prior to those dates. Yes, I am familiar with animals that work with the disabled, I am disabled too. Yes, I am familiar with the animals who have been rescued. Also, one of my friends used to be a trainer at Sea World so yes, I have spoken in depth to a trainer at Sea World and have spoken to other trainers during our visits there. Although Sea World may do some good, they certainly need to make sure they weed out what is harmful to animals, even if the animals are not harmed at Sea World but end up at Sea World in captivity for entertainment purposes. As reported on the cnn today, Sea World was fined for safety violations so they do have issues that they need to work on. In addition, I have been to the Manatee Park in Homosassa, FL and have heard long talks informing the public about humans/boats, etc. hurting the manatees, this sickens me too as manatees are gentle giants.

Keep in mind that my intent was to discuss the movie "The Cove" and how dolphins are captured, sold, taken out of their natural habitat all for public entertainment.

Have you seen "The Cove"?

Please watch "The Cove", that way you can make an educated decision about what you want to do.

Have you seen "The Cove"?

No, I have not seen the Cove, nor do I have any desire to. I choose to obtain my information from real life experiences I witness not by watching a film made by someone with an agenda. Nor do I get information third hand from someones "friend" who "used" to be a trainer. If you have in fact spoken to trainers at Sea World then you know they "weed out" anything harmful to the animals in their care.

If your intent was to discuss "The Cove" why post on the Sea World planning board? Why not on the Community Board?

Guess who Homosassa and the rest of the Manatee reserves call when an animal is in trouble and needs help?

Since you are against animals in captivity, do you visit Animal Kingdom or Animal Kingdom Lodge or even Epcot?

I have watched the cove I felt really upset for them and its sad what they are doing But I felt like it was attack on seaworld even though they have nothing to do with it I feel seaworld do good and it has not made me change my mind about going to seaworld
