I like having the TripTiks. I can't tell you how many times with using GPS, it will just decide to freeze up or my parents had one that was going on the fritz with the battery. It literally just up and turned off on my many times (and this while being plugged INTO the lighter plug).
Thankfully, I had done a TripTik before hand and studied where I needed to go a LOT before I left.
I was going by myself with my older 2 boys for a Cub Scout overnighter. My parents let me borrow their GPS since I didn't have one then but driving solo, it was a bit useless when it would just randomly turn off.
We always have the good old fashioned maps of some sort "just in case".
