My DS20 is looking into this and I told him I would ask here.

This is from the email he sent me: this company is owned by tracfone and net10... called Straight Talk.
$30 a month gets 1000 min 1000 text and 30mb of internet...

I used it last year - we started with the unlimited plan for $45, moved down to the "all you need" (or something like that) which is what you quoted for $30 and it was STILL too many minutes for us...crazy, huh? I ended up going back to regular tracfone, but would not hesitate to move back to Straight Talk if I needed more minutes. Loved the service. It's exactly the same service as Tracfone/Net 10 except you know what you're getting and you have to pay it every month.

If they really use the minutes, it's worth it. Let's say they use 900 minutes at $30 (not even including text/internet) - that is just over .03 per minute. Tracfone's lowest is .066 per minute (1500 minute card with 30 days of service). Net 10 is .10 a minute.

If they will use less than 500 minutes a month then Tracfone is probably a better way to go.

DH has straight talk. He should have the phone surgicly attached to his ear. He has the unlimited plan. Works out very well for him since he talks sooooo much.
DD & I have tracfone since we use our phones very little comparitively. We both have phones which offer double minutes for life. We are on a monthly plan which gives me 50 min/mo and DD 30 min/mo (double each b/c of the phone). Total cost is about $17/mo for both of us.
Went to Tracfone and Straight talk to save money. We were on Verizon and satisfied were with service, but the price was prohibitive since hubby is such a heavy phone user. We save a bundle. Service coverage is just fine. Have been from east to west coast with no problems. I believe tracfone/straight talk uses everybody's towers so coverage is just fine.

Another Straight Talk user here...switched from my $70 a month plan on Sprint to the $30 plan on Straight talk three months ago. I'm saving $40 a month and I would never go back. This service is really for talk and text. While they do advertise the "web", it is pretty basic and quite slow. The call reception and texting are both great though!

It's legit -- and exclusively sold at Walmart.

Coverage-wise, "Straight Talk" uses Verizon's towers, so if Verizon works where you live, this will, too...

I just got my friend to switch to Straight talk and it's been great! She had Boost mobil, which was more expensive and had spotty coverage. Straight talk uses Verizon towers, so if you are in a good Verizon area, you will have good service with straight talk

Thank you all for your helpful replies! DS went ahead and purchased a $300+ cell phone from them online (he wants the bells and whistles) but it sounds like it will be the right service for him! It is giving him a "free" $30 service which should cover one month. He does want the internet thing...he seems to understand that it will be slow. He did not go through Walmart, as far as I know...just did it all online. Maybe I missed something.

Thanks again!

I did mine online also, but it is the same plan.

I have the $30 a month plan thinking that if I used more than 1000 minutes a month I would bump it up to the unlimited plan.

Well, wonder of wonders, the unused minutes roll over! I have had the phone since March and I still have 42 hours on my account.

I have only had 1 issue, a message sent did not get to me until a couple of days later when another message was sent. Other than that, it is a great plan.

My wife use to sell it at Wal-Mart. She HATES ABSOLUTELY HATES their customer service - and when she also sells tracfone and Sprint, that's saying something. This is her take:

If you NEED to keep your cell phone number, Don't get it. It's way too easy to loose you number. If you don't care about your cell number, it's the best deal in cellular.

Here's the biggest reason, if you don't make your monthly payment in 30 day from the date AND TIME from the last, you'll loose your number. That means if you pay on the 1st at 6:00pm and then pay on the 1st of the next month at 8:00pm, you'll loose your number because 8:00pm is past 6:00pm.

You absolutely do not lose your number. My husband has had straight talk for about 7 months and every month he forgets to put his card in when he is supposed to. We did have to call CS once to get them to turn his phone back on because he was a couple of days late in getting the card in but they still gave him back his same number. Your best bet is to put it on automatic pay each month that way you don't have to worry about getting disconnected. FYI, customer service is out of the country so it is hard to understand them at times but that is no different than most companies nowadays.

I agree that their customer service (or no-service) leaves a lot to be desired.

When I was trying to put it on automatic billing (so I don't have to remember to charge it each month) I had to deal with them. Ugh, not fun. But once I got auto billing set up, I have not had to call them for anything.

An update. They just did the adding of 1000 minutes per month today and they cleared out all of my roll over hours.:scared1:

Did that happen to anyone else? I had it for 4 months and just started my 5th month. It is not a big deal because I really don't go over the 1000 minutes, but there might be a time when I do. Oh well.

My DH had Verizon prepaid. It was .75 a day but he could only call other Verizon customers. So he was very limited what he done. I saw in the sales ad the new phone at WM and I went and got him that one. He has the unlimited plan and he loves it so far.

It's actually nice b/c before he couldn't txt me unless he used some of his extra funds from the account. Now he's burning up phone with txt messages. LOL. But it's nice.

We are both happy that he went with them.
