I've been getting tons of pop-ups lately, computer was running slower than normal, and I was tired of waiting for my DH to do something about it.

So I went to spybot.com and downloaded a free version of Spy Sweeper.

It removed 1,387 spyware files! Holy cow, that's a lot of spyware!

I have the free version of Ad-Aware, and it was catching maybe 12-13 a day when I'd do a scan.

After the Spy Sweeper scan, I can hop from site to site with no lagging and the pop-ups have stopped completely!

I could download and buy it online, but I'd rather buy it at Best-Buy, which is where I'm going come tomorrow morning!

Before I buy it, does anyone have anything negative to say about Spy Sweeper?

Nothing bad to say, but if you can download a trial version for free, why go out and buy it? Just keep using the trial version until it expires and then download it again. By that time, it will probably be upgraded to include any new threats.

Okay, one pop-up is still getting through, it's called belgiandip.com and asks me to click on my favorite screensaver.

I thought the free version was only good for a one time scan only. If not, cool! I'll have to check.

A recent entrant in the spyware removal field, Webroot Software's SpySweeper doesn't claim to do anything especially revolutionary, but it does claim to do everything we were looking for. It let us down, detecting only 7 out of 20 pieces of spyware and clashing with Norton AntiVirus.

We were glad to see a warning from SpySweeper that removing BrilliantDigital would cause Kazaa to fail. SpyBot issued a general warning that such things could happen, but only SpySweeper was so specific.

Troublingly, SpySweeper missed some well-known spyware applications, including Aureate/Radiate, eZula, and Web3000. Despite Webroot's claim to remove key loggers and Trojan horses, the product didn't remove NetObserve, WinWhatWhere, or NetBus.

As with BPS Spyware/Adware Remover and PestPatrol, Norton AntiVirus 2003 failed spectacularly following the spyware removal process, and on one of our test configurations the system became so unstable that it was unusable. Webroot confirmed the problem but couldn't explain it

Every day, I run SpySweeper and everyday, it detects adware on my computer! How does it keep coming back?
Also, I keep getting messenger popups! How do I completely stop messenger service?

As for anti-spyware software, I used the free version of Ad-aware for about 6 months, alongside and in tandem usage with Spybot S&D, a combination that seems to be fairly universally recommended by the various geeks, here, on geek talkshows and geek forums. Using the two of them I virtually eliminated spyware, the only thin being that it was reactive, removing any that got in since previous scan. With Ad-aware sort of being a defacto inustry standard, at least currently, I decided to get the 'pay-for' Ad-aware Plus, which is proactive in keeping the garbage off in the first place. Since instgalling that, it has performed flawlessly, 100%. And when I do periodically run Spybot S&D, it no longer finds any, none, as hey have all be intercepted by the Ad-aware Plus. I am a happy camper.
