I love this! I read about it in consumer reports a year or so ago but I recall there being a fee to use it then and I didn't want to pay. Now it is free and you even get 1% interest. You basically route your main checking account to smartypig and you can deposit at any time. You set a goal in smartypig - ie Disney Vacation and you make deposits into this virtual bank. I love it b/c everytime I avoid a purchase etc. I log onto my app and transfer the cash from checking to smartypig as a way of saying " see I didn't buy the starbucks for 4.00 would rather put it into my Disney fund". I have saved over 400 in the last 2 weeks signing up. My daughter has a piggy goal on mine as well (minors under 18 have to attach to parents account but can view their own goals). She has saved 600 this summer t owards a laptop and loves seeing the pig along with the goal amount, percent you are there, etc.

Very cool app! Check out www.smartypig.com

We love smartypig. That's our primary savings account for Disney and other savings goals. I didn't know they have an app, I will have to check it out. Thanks!

How easy is it to access your money once it's in your Smartypig account? I've looked into using this before, but that's the only thing that has me worried.

it is kind of like paypal. once you close your goal money takes about a week to hit your account. But you can always close goal a week ahead of when you NEED the money...

Are they an actual bank? Are they FDIC insured?

And I thought they had a debit card. Is that wrong? I have thought about it because the interest is slightly better but I know Capital One 360 is insured.

yes, yes and yes! :) They got a great rating from Consumer Reports and MSNBC gave them a nice write up , their interest use to be higher but 1% is better than most anymore! There is a debit card but I am not opting for that personally. Just using it to save for Disney!
