anyone use Phernergan aka promethazine for motion sickness?

My doctor gave me a prescription for it for motion sickness. Anyone try it? How did you like it, and what if any side effects did you have? I am trying to avoid using the patch, as I have used it several times before and I seem to experience the side effects worse than most people... I will also be bringing Bonine along.

My Mother in law swears by it and took it when she went to Anartica a few years ago. While I also had a prescription (for compazine as well), I found the Bonine to work just fine and didn't need the promethazine.

Start taking the Bonine before your get onboard and then once in the morning and once at night and you should be fine. I also had experienced no side effects with the Bonine.

Phenergan (Promethazine) is a prescription anti-emetic. It is VERY sedating for most people and can even cause some disorientation/confusion in normal patients. While it may cure your motion sickness, you may also snooze through your cruise!

I was given phenergan for nausea once while in hospital. That's when I found out I was allergic to it. It did calm the queasy stomach feeling, but it made me start having seizures. It only lasted a few minutes, but it scared my family out of their wits.

People either love or hate Phenergan. I took it for hyperemesis (uncontrolled vomiting) during pregnancy and actually preferred the nausea and vomiting to the dizziness and sedation caused by Phenergan. My antiemetic of choice is Zofran. Not sure if it works for motion sickness, but it worked wonders for me while pregnant with the only side effect being constipation at higher dosages. It also costs about $25.00 per pill, so it is outrageously expensive. It is also commonly used for chemo patients. As a nurse, I have also seen severe reactions to Phenergan in children. I would never give it to my own son under any circumstances. All you can do is try it and see if it works for you. Good luck!

Phenergen will knock you out ........it is a mild sedative. I wouldn't touch that stuff..lol... I've taken that before and couldn't even keep my eyes open. I would suggest Zofran. It does wonders for nausea!!

My DS3 was prescribed this for vomitting when he was 2 and I did not like how it affected it him at all. It completely knocked him out for several hours. He was then prescribed generic Zofran (ondansetron), which was a much better option. I think our co-pay was something like $15 for a 50 ml bottle. Like others have said, Zofran is used in chemo patients to prevent nausea and our pediatrician said she took it for morning sickness when she was pregnant.

My kids take Phernergan for motion sickness on a plane and it works really well for them. DD in particular used to get very sick (she'd still be getting sick when the plane landed and they were opening the doors) Now neither her or DS get sick at all on the flight, but it does have a sedative effect so I wouldn't use it on the cruise. Luckily neither of them suffered from motion sickness on our first cruise.

The seasick pills they give out at Guest Services work brilliantly - all of those in our family who were feeling a bit wobbly took them and they worked really well and with no sedating effects. The pills were meclazine, and unfortunately we can't get them in the UK, but I would definitely recommend them for anyone feeling a bit wobbly on board. Phenergan has a strong sedative effect.

Not for motion sickness but for a bad cough. WOW, I know it would work because it knocks you out-you can't be seasick when you are nearly comatose!

My daughter gets motion sickness and the bonine works great for her. No side effects (so has also tried the wristbands and those were effective too but not "cool" for a 10 year old to wear in public!)

DW's ob/gyn actually prescribed phenergan for her when we were going on our last DCL cruise, but she never ended up using it. She was just fine with the sea-sick wrist bands and the prego-pops (ginger sucking candies & lolly-pops)...

that being said, I was told by a doc to take one of her 25mg pills for a bad case of nausea that I was having (not on the cruise, but later), and it dropped me like a rock. Lesson learned for me, so I'd stay away from it if possible....DW swears by the wrist bands

Hi: I use this for every cruise!! I ususally take it at night before I go to bed-however, on the last cruise, we were in a SPH room waay forward and I had to take it more often. I never felt tired-although I did sleep well at night! By the way-make sure your prescription says clearly PILL FORM-you really don't want to take it the other way!

Also if you have a history of restless leg syndrome, don't take these meds. Your legs will be going crazy! The best advise anyone can give is to take a pill a few days before you leave to see how you react to it.

I've had this side effect while taking this medication too.....it's horrible.

Anytime a Doctor asks me if I am allergic to anything ...I say yes..Phenergan....b/c of all the side effects I had while I was taking it.....

Exactly! Phenergan will knock you out! I can not stay awake when I take this stuff. You don't want to spend your cruise in a fog. TRY the bonine first. If it doesn't work then I would only take the Phenergan at night!!!

It has been a while since I cruised, but when I did, I took Dramamine Non-Drowsy twice a day. It says you can take 1-2 per day, so I took one in the morning and one in the evening so I was always covered. Dramamine has always worked for me- motion sick since I was an infant, especially on boats.
