I read an article in the WSJ today about packing cubes. Seems like a good idea, but are they more of a pain than they're worth? I know lots of use use the ziploc bag method to organize your luggage. packing cubes offer more space and ventilation. Are they worth it?

What is a packing cube? This is the first I've heard of it. I travel for work a good bit, and haven't heard of these.

Can you give me some info on who makes it and what it does?

I have the ones from Eagle Creek that I got at Container store. I only use them to pack underwear, socks etc and that comes in very handy !

I bought the ebags packing cubes and they are very well made. I like them because they do make everything very tidy in the suitcase and I don't have to worry that if someone opens the bag to inspect it something will fall out and get lost. The smaller ones are great for socks. There is actually numerous uses for them however I admit I've only used them for travel so far. Anyway if you're wondering about the quality of the ebags cubes I give them a :thumbsup2

I just purchased the medium packing cubes from eBags. My carryon has both my laptop and my clothing in the same compartment. A packing cube holds 2 Tshirts, 2 pairs of socks, undergarments and a pair of nylon pants. With the cube, I don't have to worry about people seeing my "unmentionables" when I dig out my laptop and accessories for my DD's. Since they came in a set of 3, I gave one of the extras to each of my DD's. They should be able to hold at least 2 outfits for each child. I can't wait to fully pack!!!

So what happens if TSA searches your bags, do they zip the cubes back up? Seems like a great idea though.

We have 6 sets of packing cubes, mine are pink, DS has blue, DH has red. We use them wherever we travel by car or plane and I really think they help. I used to do the ziploc thing but my DS is now 11 and can handle getting his own clothes in the morning! :)

I use them for everything--I roll our clothing and put them in the cubes, stuff socks or undies in the corners or in between. I also use them for shoes--keeps the dirty bottoms off my clothes. They are convenient also for some toiletry things that don't need to go in a carry on, etc.. At the hotel I keep my stuff in them and just put the cube into the drawers as I've heard that sometimes hotel drawers are where travelers throw their dirty things. We hang up what we need to and just pull things out of the cubes as needed.

As far as the TSAs, they have mentioned many times how they appreciated how everything is so neat and easy to check. A couple have asked me where I bought them (ebags) and said they liked the way they work. The colors also help me when packing bags as I like to mix up each person's items in case of lost luggage issues and the system works for me.
