Just curious if anyone who uses Aperture 3 knows of any good tutorial sites. I pretty new to editing and am trying to start off with something simple first.

Thanks for the links. I have over 30k photos and iphoto was just grinding away so slowly. I like the organization of aperture and the option to turn faces off since it seems to run much smoother now. I have another question for you. Initially I askd it to just use the iphoto library.

Since then I have been organizing and deleting pictures, is it difficult for me to split the library into pieces (I was thinking by decades or major life events)? This way I can just manage maybe 5k-10k photos at a time instead of the 30k all at once.

I split things by what Apple calls events, and is usually by date. I have all my disney stuff in a separate library, it's very easy to split stuff off into a new library in Aperture, just select the Project or Projects you want to move out, right click, and choose export -> "Project as new Library..."

I also use Aperture 3. Been using it since version 1.1, I think. I love the program and think it's a great tool for asset management.

Something to consider when you split your libraries apart. If you ever decide to merge them together, the Keywords will all come back at the top level, not nested.

I switched to four different libraries to help performance when I had an older system with less RAM. Now that I have a more powerful system, I'd like to blend them together. However, that's going to create a mess out of my nested keyword. Not looking forward to fixing that issue.

Are you all using the installed Aperture or the app from the app store for Macs? I asked at the store the other day about the Aperture app and was told it's the same but you import the photos that you want to put into from Aperture.

The app sold from the Mac App store is the same.

Another good online resource is ApertureExpert.com with free online training sessions, video training, tips, articles, user forum and more.

No, my version is older (and therefore more expensive). It's the same software, but it just doesn't get updates from the App store. It still gets them from the old Software Update utility.
