Anyone use AAMCO?

I just found out my 2007 Toyota Sienna needs a new transmission. The repair shop where we normally go to "sublets" out transmissions to AAMCO. The cost is going to be about $3500 with a AAA discount (big budget buster!). Just wondering if anyone has any experience with AAMCO either good or bad. I'm supposed to be leaving in 13 days for road trip withe kids from MA to Hilton Head and I'm very nervous about the transmission having issues on the road. One thing I like about AAMCO is that they have locations everywhere and your warranty is good at all of them.

I'm so frustrated as I brought my car in 3 times (twice to a different local repair shop & once to the dealership) because the engine was very loud. All three times they told me everything was fine and not to worry about it. Not sure if this could have been prevented or not.

We used them ~7 years ago when our Ford Bronco needed a new transmission. The AAA discount on it was nice as it came to about $2500. While they fixed it that's where our pleasant experience ended. Our issue with AAMCO is just with the one particular business that we used. I don't know where you are located, but if it is in the Portland, OR area do NOT use the one in Grisham!

They did not tell us until we had already paid them that our vehicle and about 20 others had been broken into and thing stolen. Since we were on our way home to CA from WA all of our Christmas presents and many of our personal items had been left in the vehicle as we had to fly home. They did not offer to refund our money or give us a discount on the work, the incident happened a week before we paid for the vehicle to be fixed, and they did not file a police report. Most likely it was an inside job as the vehicles had been in their secure area. Anyways, we filed the police report and disputed the claim with our credit card company. It was one big headache that left mold, damaged interior, and missing items for us to deal with.

I would check into another opinion. My DD had been told, years ago by AAMCO that her trans. was no good, and quoted a price. She did need trans. work done, but had someone else do it for half the price. (Din't need a new one) Now she went to another AAMCO for an oil change, and they say she needs a new trans, that it's going bad and she shouldn't drive it. She's never had any trouble with it. (Different car) She told them she may take it to the dealer and they told her not to, that they would charge her too much. I don't trust these kinds of places. They had offered super deals on oil changes, so they can "upsell" services, and scare those who they feel don't know better.
