We are thinking of buying a Trac phone for our DD, for emergencies only, and I'm wondering how they work. Anyone help me out? :sunny:

My dh just got one a week ago and we aren't thrilled with it. It charges you minutes for EVERYTHING- even getting help with your phone :earseek: If you talk for 1 min and 1 second, it charges you for 2 minutes.

I used one for years and loved it. Where we live, there was only one mobile company we could use and it was too expensive at the time, so I got a tracfone. I was able to get service absolutely everywhere with it (even in the boonies of WV), BUT when they went GSM, it wasn't the same.

The minutes are expensive, but you get a lot of coupons for free minutes and you can find coupons on the internet. Like the other poster mentioned, if you call from your tracfone you get billed for service, but just don't call from your cell phone -- call from your home phone.

Now my DD has one. They have a great special going on where you buy a phone card for $19 and you get a reconditioned phone for free.

I have had one for over a year and got one for my husbands truck and we use them all the time. We love it and know that we do not have to pay 40 plus dollars for a cell phone just for emergencies......I plan on getting one for our grandkids............

We used to have one and when our current contract is up with Cingular Im thinking of going back to one. The minutes are expensive but if you are only using it for emergencies it really does work out. We used our phones a lot and thought it would be less expensive to have a plan.....WRONG!!! What should be costing me 75.00 a month ends up costing me well over a hundred each month. Seems there is always a reason for it to be more expensive.

Thanks for the replys! :teeth: We were kind of looking at the phone they have at Wal-Mart on sale, but the $19.00 one sounds pretty good. Does anyone know the website address?

The addy is http://www.tracfone.com

It looks like the $19 sale ends on Dec. 1, but I think it's something they do every once in a while. I got my DD's for that price in September.

I got one for myself about 2 years ago for use in my car, it works great,
My DW got one about a 1.5 years ago, she would only use her cell phone about 10 to 15 min per month so 40+ dollars a month was to much and Trac phone just makes séance. we got a simple freedom (another pre paid company) for our DS (14), we give a set amount of time per month (helping to teach responsibility). DS (11) a trac phone for Christmas. All in All we are happy with the level of service provided by Trac Phone.

I had one for a couple of years and it was great. I loved that if I bought minutes from their website, I got double the minutes for the same price.

Eventually, it became more cost effective for me to have a monthly plan, but the whole time I had it, it was great.

Check out their website. They usually have a reconditioned phone FREE with a one year paid card. It is one year of service and 150 minutes. Just under $100. The phone has a one year warranty. A pretty good deal for emergencies. Plus, you don't have to remember to add airtime every couple months. My DH has had a tracfone for about 4 years now.

I've had one for several years now. It has no bells or whistles, just generic ring tones and a few games, but all I need it for is emergencies, and to check in with the boys at home after school, etc. It's not for chit-chatting while I'm at the mall or "just for the heck of it" types of calls.

Unused minutes roll over...it serves me well. I think it would be a good starter phone for a young teen.
