I wasn't sure what the heck these things were. My wife is now addicted to ordering from the Asian grocery delivery company Weee. But they sell more than traditional Asian groceries (which we find interesting - especially a lot of Japanese and Korean style snacks) but also a lot of oddball stuff. She got a special deal on these.
The company describes itself as an art collective called MSCHF. The flavorings are kind of a joke since the back says stuff like "contains 0% horse meat" and I've heard reviews saying that it tasted like BBQ chips. Not sure what fugu would taste like, as I've been told the fish itself is pretty bland, although there's claims of a mild tingle from a tiny amount of the nerve toxin, although some say it's just psychological if it's prepared safely. And I knew a place that had fugu legally, but it was maybe a few weeks a year and very expensive. It was totally bizarre too as it was an extremely well trained chef with a restaurant in a nondescript strip mall. All the Japanese expats I worked with knew about this place because it was all about the food and not about the looks. And with casu marzu - I first heard about it from Italian friends. I've never had it before and it seems weird to have maggots going through cheese, but then again cheese is bacteria and enzymes going through milk solids. But all of this is supposed to be simulated somehow, where they had someone develop the flavor profile rather than use anything real. And the company seems to be doing this more like it's performance art than anything else, although they do have a product to sell.
