A question for all those of you out there who've been in August. Thinking about an August trip in 2003 to Swan or Dolphin. How was the weather and crowd size? Are there lots of conventions during this time that might affect Grotto pool?

Thanks for any input!

It's hard to predict conventions based on past years', because new conventions come, old ones don't; just because there may have been one large and three small ten years ago doesn't mean that last year wasn't 2 large and no small or that this year won't be one family reunion and nothing else. It changes year to year.
You can call the SD and they will tell you what's scheduled, though.

As for the weather and crowd size, well, it's Florida, it's school vacation and it's August. No matter which hotel you stay in, that means it's hot and the parks are crowded...but the Grotto pool is great! Not as crowded during the day as other resorts, with plenty of chairs and space for all!

We stayed at the Dolphin last August and loved it. We never saw any conventioners. Maybe because we left around 9 and didn't return till 10 or 11 most nights. The pool never closed and was never over crowded and neither were the restaurants. We had an awsome stay, an awsome view of Epcot and MGM (standard room) and loved the pool and room and especially the transportation to Epcot and MGM and walking to the Boardwalk. It's truly a wonderful resort and IMHO the best Resort location. Good luck and hope you have a great stay.

If you're going in the later part of the month you may deal with less crowds because many schools are back in session the last 2 weeks of August. I know off peak starts after the 15th of August this year. As far as weather, well that's always fickle.

August brings lots of those afternoon storms and from our experience last September with the non stop rains on some days well, it may put a damper on things. It's also the beginning of hurricane season.

As a poster mentioned conventions can be different all times during the year. If the hotel is sold out, more than likely it is because there's a lot of or a few big conventions going on. On our most recent trip to the S/D we stayed at the Dolphin which was very quiet, very nice. The Swan was sold out. You probably wouldn't really know how busy it will be til a few weeks before you go.
