Anyone stockpiling food?

Does anyone know if I toast my whole loaf of bread, will it last longer? I have no room in my small fridge or freezer. Doesn't mold grow because of the moisture in bread? So if I toast it, it may not get moldy so fast? I bought it just for all the hummus I eat. I was going to get pitas and toast them. But the store was decimated. There were only a few loaves of any bread. They actually left a salt free bread I actually eat. :thumbsup2

Yeah as be prepared for having toilet paper, water, and hand sanitizer

So we have all this food ready...I'm afraid to eat it! :rotfl:
DH asked me if he was on rations. I told him to just slow down on the oreos🤣

If my DGM was alive? All I would need...Spam, Vienna sausages and Cheerios. Those were her favorites towards the end of her days.

Right? Spent hundreds on a supply and still ordering takeout. My reasoning is that I am afraid takeout won't be an option in 2 weeks!
Exactly. We want to support our local favorites as much as possible. We are also buying gift cards with our orders.

I know! I was so happy to read restaurants will still be open during the lockdown here. . . but for how long?

The government of Oregon has been reinforcing for years about being prepared for the major destructive earthquake heading to the Cascadian rift in the next 30 years, so I have always been prepared, 3 weeks ahead of the game....so brought that mind set to Yuma....where I would, if I could climb the highest mountain outside my backyard ...I could see the San Andreas fault .

I have a lot of food now. I still have to find a way to preserve fresh bagged salad. I have a lot of olives, banana peppers, canned chicken, canned tuna, and packets of chicken and tuna. I also have a hoard of lite ranch salad dressing.

I put a paper towel around greens and then store in a ziplock that I actually keep open. They last quite a while this way. For some reason when I close the bag they don’t stay as fresh as long.

Yes, I've found a really absorbent paper towel, down especially near the bottom where the wetness happens does a lot to save the greens from getting mushy & slimy, once the bag has been opened.

And tonight, I soaked what was left in a bag, that looked like it might only be good for another day, in cold water. They really perked back up, especially the romaine stems, which brown the quickest. They actually look less brown. I skimmed off the little bits that floated to the top. They are the stuff that gets slimy and I think starts making the rest go bad. I sorted through and rinsed off the leaves that had bits stuck to it. Then they went in a colander to drain before being patted down with paper towels. Then dry ones to store with them. I think I have a few more days of life to them. (Nutrition may be another matter.)

I'll have to try leaving the bag open. Someone showed me how she is able to make a head of iceberg lettuce last quite a while by storing it in a paper bag instead of in plastic. It might be the same idea, allowing air to permeate around the lettuce.

I know what you mean. Decided to stop dipping into the chest freezer and eat as much freshly prepared food as possible. No idea what tomorrow will bring so better to keep my stores for as long as possible. Doesn't mean it's completely hands off for the cold and stable pantries just I'm judicious about using them.

@Imzadi - Not big bread eaters here (on my 2nd decade of lo carb maintenance) but was able to fit a half a loaf of pumpernickel in the freezer. Rice cakes are stored in a metal tin that used to hold popcorn. I think toasting bread before storing would be counterproductive. Can you divide the loaf into smaller packets to store in various nooks and crannies of the freezer? Another possibility- put it in a toaster oven. Not as air tight or warm as a microwave oven.

I already feel like I'm rationing! I have warned my family, however, that I am going to be the food police and NOTHING will be wasted as has been the case in the past. No new food will be made until the food in the fridge has been consumed. The tendency, despite my griping, has been to make new food and then other food gets shuffled to the back and forgotten. While they've gotten better, I have had a meeting with the fam and it's all hands on deck with "no wasting" and cleaning. So far it's going really well! Stay safe, everyone!!

I went mom crazy with my DS. He is the type that fills a cereal bowl with too much milk and tosses a cup of milk away that is left over. Never really noticed this and went on a “ wasting milk” rampage. Thank god in Germany we have “H” milk. Real milk ultrapaturized in Tetra packs. Doesn’t need Refrigeration and last for months. I don’t recall ever seeing these in the states? We have 30 Liter cartons in the basement

It's amazing how this thread changed. New York is somewhat getting bettter what you can find in stores. Toilet paper is still tough to find, But Chicken is beginning to reemerge in stores. Apaarently chicken is the choice meat of NY for an apocalypse.

I had a flour fairy visit my house. I am only doing pick up/delivery with groceries. Couldn't find any flour , not in any size. Mentioned it to my DD (2 1/2 hours away), who just happen to mention how crazy is that to a friend who lives about 20 mins from my house. No requests, just talking. Next morning, my DH opens the door and says "there's a bag of flour on our porch".

Was very sweet of her.
