Anyone stockpiling food?

Freddie Highmore, who plays a surgeon on, The Good Doctor, was just on Jimmy Kimmel. He said the Coronavirus has affected the show in a different way. The producers gathered all of them together on set the other day. They said, "We know you are concerned about the Coronavirus. But you have to stop taking all the surgical masks. We're running out of them for the show." :lmao:

Freddie also said the cast/crew have been stealing all the antibacterial soap too. But, he pointed out that since it's a virus, it's useless against the Coronavirus.

People were stockpiling for those that before the virus hits. As they are called extreme couponers there?!

Serious question...do have a generator for that if you lose power? We lose power fairly regularly, so having a grand's worth of food in my fridge or freezer would worry me. I get that if left alone the chest freezer is incredibly efficient and will stay cold a long time, but we've had instances where we lost power for a long time, too. :)
No generator (or any place to put it) but I do have a stand alone alarm attached to the unit in case someone pulls the plug by accident. That happened once and I learned my lesson.
Mostly underground cables in this area and when the power goes off about once every 20 years it hits the national news, LOL. Next time the power goes off guess I'll feed my neighbors too;).

all those doomsday preppers will be wiped out in the next couple of weeks.
Those aren't doomsday preppers - those are people panicking. Doomsday preppers are already holed up in their bunkers with 5 years worth of supplies that they've been buying their whole lives. We watched a couple episodes recently. All I can say is, "wow". I live in Wa. state and the stores are getting cleared out. Costco was out of TP, paper towels and bottled water. And various vitamins. And all their registers stopped working for part of the day (system crashed due to high volume of sales, maybe every where?) so they could only take cash during that time. Dh just went to get some salad and avocados, lol. The lines were all snaking through aisles and by the time Dh got to the register they were working again. All our stores are seeing similar empty shelves - hand sanitizers have been out for days.

I have Amazon brand wipes in my next subscribe and save order. Hopefully they show up!!!
I got an email that one of my subscribe and save items (monthly) could not be fulfilled - green tea bags??? I like brewing green tea - why would there be a run on that? First time that's happened.

I do think the upside to living in a city is that we have a LOT of places to buy things. Not necessarily the best prices, but it's not an entire town going to three supermarkets. There's bodegas, Duane Reade/CVS, various forms of speciality markets, etc. If we find out we need it, it will be crazy, but there are a good number of options.

I remember before one of the blizzards, a nearby market was near sold out of meat and the checkout line was out the door, but... that's a Trader Joe's on a weekend, so. Heh.
You must live near me. That Trader Joe’s is crazy. 😂😂

Or are the people just wanting to be prepared? I don't see anyone panicking on this thread. I see people trying to get prepared in case of supply disruptions, quarantines, etc.

Waiting for store to open somewhere in California.

Wow, some people are nuts!!! We live in a fair size city with lots of different stores, big box, warehouse stores, etc. but have not seen anything different, just business as usual.

Personally, I'm doing nothing different, have always kept a well stocked pantry and freezers. I always like to cook what I want when I want without running to the grocery.

Why, oh why are people stockpiling masks when they do nothing for general population of well people - sick people yes, according to CDC

My 23 yo DD arrived in Seattle late January for a job/program with Marriott. When she got to work yesterday she simultaneously heard the deaths had climbed to six and her boss had sent a coworker that she’d worked with all day the previous day home with cold/flulike symptoms. It sent her into a little bit of a panic attack and I admit it freaked me out a little bit too. I had to remind us both that she is young and healthy and not high risk. Hysteria leads to hysteria even for those of us who don’t normally panic about these kinds of things.

She says things are dead at her hotel and they’ve had tons of cancellations. A friend of hers who also moved out there for the program could not find toilet paper or wipes at the grocery store. Me being me sent DD out there with a huge multipack along with paper towels, wipes and tons of cleaning supplies so she is covered there. She’s supposed to come home this weekend but with them declaring a State of Emergency it’s kind of up in the air. I kind of want to tie her down and not let her go back. She’s worried she might not be able to get back.

i'm on the eastern side of the state. i went to 2 grocery stores and found limited supplies of water, dairy and produce. w/the dairy it was largely the ultra pasteurized brand of milk up here that lasts over a month in the fridge, with the produce it was the non organic (organic sections were still decently stocked-non was very slim pickings, maybe people were buying it up b/c it has a longer shelf life?).

local pharmacy? whoo boy i felt for them. aside from having to deal with cranky people over not having any masks or hand sanitizer left they are getting bombarded with scrip refills and people trying to get 30 day supplies approved for 90 days. a number of their standard scrip meds have run low such that people were being given partial refills on their regular monthly scrips and being told to call back before returning in a couple of days b/c they were waiting on getting restocked.

as an aside-i watch the local news as well as the national and i don't know if it's a direct attempt to not spread additional panic but i'm very surprised that the national is not touching much on how many school districts and private schools in washington (and idaho) have closed down to do some type of preventative deep cleaning or wait on testing results for someone connected to individual schools. i just read that one private school on the westside is going to strictly on-line instruction through at least april 13th. i really feel for the parents who are left scrambling to try to find childcare.

I went to Aldi yesterday and DH went to Sam's Club for a few things we normally get there. Aldi was business as usual, nothing wiped out and not unusual crowds. Husband said Sam's was busy but it pretty much always is... they weren't out of anything. He bought some Clorox wipes which I thought was interesting because I don't really use those at home. But I guess I will now if it makes him feel better, ha.
