We're getting ready to move cross-country in a couple weeks and we want to sell DH's work car before we go. I was thinking about trying ebay (I've had some selling experience on there), but I'm nervous about it. Is ebay motors more for dealerships or has anyone done a personal sale on there? What kind of experiences have you had? If I decide to do it, what should I be careful of?

About a year and a half ago, prior to moving, I sold a 34 year old 1969 Cougar XR7 Convertible. I described all the options that I had ordered when I bought the car (brand new) in 1969. I described the physical condition, including that it had not been driven in over five years, did not run, and would have to be towed. I had some old pictures of it with the top down, plus current photos of the inside and the engine compartment. I stated I also had all maintenance records. I also stated that the buyer would be fully responsible for arranging delivery.

I asked people who were interested to e-mail me their phone number and I called them up with more information.

I lived in Virginia, and received qustions from people in New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and Minnesota.

I had set up a minimum bid of $500, a reserve of $1,500, and a buy it now of $5,004.10, which was the original sticker price (it was very loaded). There were several bidders, and the high bidder was $3,150 from Northern New Jersey.

We had talked over the phone and the buyer came down in a pickup truck with a full tow car trailer behind him. During a conversation we had discussed the type of trailer; I said it would not be a good idea for the kind where one set of the car's wheels would be on the ground because theose tires might not stand up to highway speeds after years of non-use. He came to my house and inspected the car still in the garage and saw that it was as good as or even better than I had described.

He and my wife and I went to my bank. He had three $1,000 bank money orders. One of the bank officers looked up his bank on her computer system and placed a call to his bank. They verified the money orders had been issued to him and were valid. He gave me the money orders plus $150 cash; all of which I immeidately deposited. We then went to lunch where my wife and I signed the title and gave him the title and maintenance records.

After lunch we went back to my house and we got the car out of the garage and loaded on the trailer, and off he went.

Haven't sold a car, but I did buy a car on Ebay, my work van, and got a great deal. My dad lived near the seller, so he went over with a money order, inspected the vehicle, and drove it home. I paid about half what I was finding on similiar vehicles locally. Good for me, not so good if you're selling I guess. I've been very happy, and it was a good transaction all around. I would simply recomend clear terms, good contact information, and lots of pictures. I was more comfortable buying because the seller said in his auction that we could back out of the deal after inspection if the vehicle was not as described. Hope this helps.

My BIL just sold his 90 Miata on ebay for $4500. A guy from SC bought it - flew up a few days after the transaction, met them at the airport with the $ and drove it back to SC.

I'd say go for it! Good Luck :wizard:

I haven't but a friend of mine sold two for their parents recently and both were purchased by someone within driving distance. It ended up costing him less to list then a local paper ad that he tried first.

We have never sold a car however we have purchased. We did get what we paid for, I just wish that the owner had been more forth coming about the entire amount of work needed. And be sure to include if the car has been in any accidents.

I'm a paramedic and our service sold a used ambulance on ebay. I wish I had 4-5 lying around because it went for just about twice what it was worth.
