Has any here seen the theatre production, Aida? I'm curious about the general storyline, the music and whether or not it would be appropriate for a 13 and 9 1/2 year old. The boys have been to many local productions, (Joseph and the Amazing Technocolor Dreamcoat is one of their favorites) and recently saw Lion King is Boston.
Thanks for any info you might have!

Aida is the story of a love triangel between an Egyptian princess, the Egyptian captain betroved to her, and a Nubian princess who has been captured by the captain. The music in it is fantastic (written by Tim Rice and Elton John). I've seen it a couple of times on Broadway, and a couple of times on tour in Boston.

I'm not sure how much it would hold the interest of 13 and 9 year old boys, though. I don't think I'd take my 13 and 9 year old nephews. There is more dialog in it than in the Lion King or Joseph. Those shows are geared towards families--Aida seems a bit more adult to me.

Are you thinking of going to see it at the North Shore Music Theatre? Their productions are usually very good, but the sets are somewhat limited at times when compared to Broadway or the tours.

Not sure if I helped, but at least I'm giving this a bump. Perhaps someone who has taken kids will see this and respond.

I've seen Aida twice and agree with Karen that unless your boys love musicals, they probably wouldn't enjoy it. It is geared to adults although I have seen children in both audiences.

I love this show and can't wait to see it again!

Actually, I'm going to disagree just a tad with my predecessors :) The music for Aida was written by the same team responsible for the music in the Lion King, Tim Rice and Elton John. It's much more "pop" oriented than "Joseph" is, in my opinion.

That said, the story (the love triangle) is possibly something that pree-teen boys are going to say "yuck" too, so I don't know that they'd necessarily enjoy it all that much just based on that part of it. But it's a great show, so in my opinion, it's worth a shot...They might surprise you :teeth:

I work right around the corner from it, I think it might be closing soon?

Yes, the Broadway show is closing at the end of the summer.

I saw it in previews in Nov. 2000. I think it is a bit adult oriented. I did enjoy it alot, but I don't think I'd take kids.

It is....Adam Pascal (the original Radames on Broadway) rejoined the cast for the summer, and it's supposed to be closing in the next few weeks (I think...I forget the close date).

We saw Aida on Broadway 2 years ago. DW and I are regular theater goers and have been for many years. Aida was the most incredible show either of us has ever seen. It is a very powerful story, script and music. We were both in tears by the end of the show and literally didn't speak for about 15 minutes after leaving the theater. There were just no words to express the depth of feeling the show elicited.

Unfortunately, the show is closing very soon. However, it will begin national tours so you may be able to catch it near you someday soon. I would definitely go see it when you have the chance.

my daughters are 12 and almost 14 and we saw the show with Heather hedley and Adam Pascal when it first opened. it wasn't too "adult" for them, they loved it.

He is WONDERFUL!!!!!!! I loved him the original cast of RENT, loved him in the original cast of AIDA.....I did not know that he rejoined for the summer, even though I did know that the show was closing.

I saw Aida this past Spring. It was my first and only Broadway show, so my opinion may not be that valuable.

Nevertheless, I absolutely loved it, but I really can't guess whether a 9 and 13 year old boy would enjoy it (my son is only 5).

But, I will say the music in the show is fantastic. In fact I loved the CD so much that when my car stereo was stolen a few months ago, I was more upset that the theives had my Aida CD than that they had stolen my radio.

But to specifically answer your question: Generally speaking, the storyline is a love story. The music is great and I didn't see anything I though was remotely inappropriate.

I strongly recommend this production. I honestly don't see how any theater production could top this one.
