Anyone remember any of these?

We were talking at lunch today about when we were kids. I didn't grow up where I live now so no one knew any of these things. When my dad was in the Navy and we lived in Norfolk VA. we always ate ice cream at Highs ice cream parlor. My grandma lived in Danville Va and they had it there too. Also when I was really little I remember shopping at Giant it was the biggest grocery store I had ever seen at that time and they had everything. My mom bought something called shake a pudding and no one that I know has ever heard of it so it must have been a regional thing and it wasn't around very long. Also one summer when we were living in DC we had fizzies. They were flavored tablets that you put in water and added sugar. They were truly awful but every kid in the neighborhood had to have them. Just curious if anyone else remembers any of these things.

I remember the shake a pudding things ( I grew up in Chicago and Wisconsin) It was truely awful and if I remember correctly the texture was kinda funky.
check out www.hometownfavorites.com they have alot of that old fashioned candy and stuff that is regional, although I don't think they make either of the things you mentioned.

NO - I don't remember any of the products you mentioned - but I DO remember shopping @ Giant - we only lived in VA for 2 yrs, so I don't remember a whole bunch - but I can remember Giant having all those bins of "health food" dried bananas, craob covered pnuts/raisins - mom & dad bought that stuff there all the time...that's all I remember...

There used to be a High's in Vinton, VA (small town beside Roanoke). I think there was one in Roanoke as well. They had the best ice cream and it was always such a treat to go there. I never knew there were others in the state.

I have cousins in Danville, but I don't ever remember a High's there. I will have to ask them about it.

I don't remember any of the other things.

I remember Fizzies

Me Too - my mother was a freak about sugar, it was not allowed and she used to give us saccharine (yuck) tablets to add to it - gross, I can still picture/taste it yucky!!

I remember fizzies - we were suppose to put them in water and make the glass of koolaid equivalent but we would break them in half and let them disolve in our mouths. It was so cool!!

I also remember the shake a pudding but I think it went by adifferent name around here.

I heard of Giant food stores too, but probably only on TV or in magazines.

We lived in Richmond when I was in high school and I remember High's ice cream parlors. Their ice cream was the best! I remember some of the High's shops had a soda fountain where you could sit at the counter to enjoy your ice cream.

We always did our grocery shopping at Giant, too.

My grandparents lived in Williamsburg, Va and I remember going to High's ice cream shops. I can remember a Giant's grocery store there too. But that was in the early 80's to mid 80's.

I remember Shake-a-Pudding and Fizzies, too. Shake-a-Pudding brings back happy memories cause my sister and I would sing and dance while shaking it in a container and my parents would cheer us on "sing it girls, shake those hips!". Thanks for reminding me of that

As for ice cream parlors, we had Farrell's here (So Cal). The waiters wore red and white striped shirts and ragtime music played. It was always a fun yummy place for a family to go.

Danville native here so I definately remember Highs
icecream parlor, they had some of the best icecream
around, they had something called a rainbow freeze
it was rainbow sherbert and something else mixed with
it, sort of like a sherbert float mmm yummy!

Oh man! I loved Farrel's! We had one in Albuquerque when I was a kid. It closed when I was about 8, I think, and then it was torn down and a row of restaurants opened in its spot

Now, hold on there, are we talking about the same thing? I grew up on fizzies (we're talking about the late 1950s and the early 1960s here, and life on the West Coast) and I never, ever added sugar to the glass! The entire idea was that you could lug around the folio-wrapped tablets until you got thirsty, and plunk one in a glass of water. And I would scarcely call them awful - orange was my favorite, but on hot summer days, I have been known to drink my way through any and every flavor we happened to have in the house.

And I remember Giant from my trips to the Washington, DC area. To a kid, it really was huge and well-stocked, although I guess by today's standards it would no longer be anything exceptional. I grew up in Berkeley, and can still remember the long-gone food stores that we used, such as Park'n'Shop. Matter of fact, almost half a century on, I still have dreams of walking the aisles of my local food store, picking up some snacks on my way to school.

Okay as far as the fizzies go I thought we had to add sugar but maybe not. This was in the early 70's. I remember the tablets being like an alka seltzer. As for those of you that remember Highs ice cream I can't imagine why it's not still around. I thought their ice cream was the best. I discovered my favorite flavor - chocolate & peanut butter. The only other place I've ever been able to find it is Baskin Robbins and we don't have one of those around here.

not only do I remember fizzies and shake a pudding, I remember the song!

Shake, shake, shake a puddin, puddin, puddin, shake a puddin! They came out about the sametime as space food sticks!!!

A few years ago they reintoduced fizzies and I got some for my kids. Needless to say they didn't get what I liked about them!
