Anyone regret getting a Kindle

I only regret buying a first generation. We should've waited until they had been out for awhile, could've saved $$ plus there's many new features we can't take advantage of. (Such as games.) But, for reading books, it's the best.

Hi! Another Kindle convert here. I am an avid reader and got my K3 for Christmas, and I will admit I was leery because I love paper books. I love turning the pages and the feel of a new book. But... that being said.. I also love being able to carry all 50 books around with me on my Kindle.

As previous posters have mentioned, it is almost too easy to buy books (dangerous for my credit card!!) There is no eyestrain with the Kindle b/c it is not backlit. Also, when I do not know the meaning of a particular word it is so easy to look up - it comes with a built in dictionary.

Never thought I would like my Kindle as much as I do. I am even buying one for my Mom for her b'day...

Now my biggest concern is I am a big magazine reader and I have heard that the Nook Color is better for obvious reasons.

I have been reading threads on here about this for quite some time, but still I am not sure.

I am glad to hear however, that EVERYONE that has it loves it!!

I have a Kindle question (and I hope I'm not hijacking the thread, just didn't want to start another one for a quick question ). So I mainly read on my lunch break. When I stop reading I slide the little power bar to put it to 'sleep'. Sometimes when it comes back 'on' it's at the same place I stopped. Sometimes it's at the main menu where all of my books are listed and then I have to scroll through the book to get to the place where I left off. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Click the options to set a "bookmark". On the Nook you just click the upper right corner and it "dog ears" the page.

I have had my Kindle over a year and love it. I bought my friend one for Christmas. I have been trying to get my older dd to try it out and then I would buy her one. She is resisting which is odd since she is a techno geek.

Seriously, it is the best gadget I've ever purchased, and I've had all three versions. I bought the 1st generation when Oprah offered the special $50 off right after it was first introduced. I used it non-stop until the battery started going a little wonky this summer. I came across a deal on Amazon for a refurbished 2nd generation for $109, so I snapped that up and loved it even more than my K1. Of course, as luck would have it, K3 was introduced a few weeks later. I kept telling myself the K2 was just fine, and I didn't need the new one. However, I had some Christmas/birthday money leftover after buying my Keurig (I agree with the PP that it is the other best thing I've ever bought!), so 2 weeks ago, I broke down and bought the K3. I love it even more than the previous 2, and now everyone in my family has a Kindle to use; DD13 uses the K2, and DH (who doesn't read much) uses the K1.

As far as books go, every morning I check the blogs and Amazon Kindle discussion boards to see what books are being offered for free that day. I have over 100 unread free books on my Kindle right now, and the ones that I have read were really good. I also was thrilled to find out the other day that you can trade in old movies and video games to Amazon for gift card credit! They pay pretty well! I sent in 6 Wii games our family no longer plays, and will be receiving almost $60 worth of Amazon GC credit for them. And, you know what that means???? More Kindle books!

Is K3 just the 3G one? And the one being offered for $139 is the K2?

You're right...K1 is the very first version of the Kindle ever produced, and only used the 3G Whispernet.
K2 is the 2nd generation produced...thinner, faster, and with software that allowed users to place their books into collections. It also only used the 3G Whispernet.
K3 is the 3rd generation produced and was released in 2010. It is the one currently being sold by Amazon. Smaller and lighter, with better screen contrast than the K2, it is available with the 3G for $189 (in white or graphite colors) or wi-fi for $139 (graphite only).
There is also the Kindle DX which is a larger size version of the Kindle, especially good for people who want to use it to read PDF files or newspapers, as it has an auto-rotating screen.

I bought a K2. Used for a long time, but went back and forth between paper and the Kindle, as I have a large collection of analog books waiting to be read.

That said, I haven't used it in ages. I have an iPad now, with the Kindle app installed, and that's what I use to read. I also have the Kindle app installed on all three laptops and my Droid X, so I'm never without a book. The biggest complaint I have with my Kindle is that it doesn't multi-task, so even though I'm only having to carry one item for multiple books, I still have to take a laptop or iPad to have access to other information. The Kindle web function is so clunky it's painful, so I refuse to use it.

The biggest like I have for the Kindle? The matte screen. I can put it down on a table and read while eating with both hands. The iPad has a glossy screen, so it can be a pain to read in certain environments.

Yes- it has WiFi only. You can use it when at home (as long as you have a wireless router) or anyplace that has WiFi (like Starbucks and other restaurants etc).

I don't regret getting my Kindle (I love it!); I do regret paying the extra for the 3G. I just haven't had the need for it. The WiFi would have been fine.

You can download items anywhere there's WiFi. I love my Kindle 3, don't know how I lived without it. I brought it to Paris in October, read my local newspaper every morning, could download guidebooks, had tons to read on the plane. LOVE it! Can't beat the price.

Clarification...you can always "use" it, meaning *read* on it. The wifi is important if you want to download something right then and there.
