Anyone Reading "Cast Member Confidential" Yet?

but you don't know much about censorship. It isnt censorship if its obscene (Miller v. California) and obscenity is determined by the community (Skyywalker Records v. Navarro, which by the way, took place right here in Florida).

Is that books burning that I smell...

To repeat (which I shouldnt have to do since you quoted me in your reply) the COMMUNITY determines what is obscene. If I get enough signatures from people in my community (or your community for that matter) who believe it qualifies as obscene, then it can be taken off the shelves. This, PeterPan09 is not my OPINION - it's a voice proclaiming loud and clear that we dont want Castmember Confidential in our neighborhood.

Yes, that is the smell of books burning.

When I read your words about 'the community' trying to determine if something is obscene I think about the Gore/Bush election and the Florida issue. Florida is a republican state correct?

Burn Baby Burn!

You are correct. But he also could have written about good things that happened while working as a CM. My daughter did the CP twice so I am well aware of what happens. He chose to show the bad side to sell books.

I agree that so far the book is pretty light on the positive-and as I said earlier, I meet so many CM's that enjoy their jobs and have been there 10 years or more that I know it isn't all like he describes. I think the personal issues that he had that drove him to take the job might have colored his perspective and made it difficult for him to even see or connect with the CM's that enjoy what they do. When you're dragging around that much negative baggage, you're not going to be receptive to people who are positive and happy with their work.

I'd love to read a more positive account of the Cast Member experience!

Yes, the people here would know but what about all those other people? The author paints a bad picture of Disney and there will be plenty that believe it all.

The author is probably laughing all the way to the bank.

I agree but I wonder how many non-Disney people would pick this book up anyway.

Good point. I'm thinking it's going to sell to people who already think Disney is bad/fake/conforming and will agree with everything he says, and it will sell to people who like Disney and want to know more about it. The upside is that anyone who really likes/loves Disney is going to see through the exaggeration and the outright lies.

My parents live in a retirement community called The Villages. A few years ago, someone wrote a book called "Leisureville" about the Villages and all the negative things that go on there. The community was outraged...but nearly everyone has read it. There were some truths in there and a LOT of embellishments but mostly it was a diatribe by someone who cannot imagine why anyone would want to move to a community where children were not welcome. He went in with an agenda against the place and found every negative thing he could.

Having finished this book, I see a similar thing. This guy had SERIOUS personal issues going on, and while I'm sure that there were some truths in the book I'm also pretty convinced that there's a TON of exaggeration. Whether that was put in for sales reasons or because the entire time period for him was negative I don't know.

I will say that he did include some really touching, positive stories about cast member interaction with guests-there's a description of a Make a Wish child with Winnie the Pooh that brought tears to my eyes. I have no problem believing that was a true story.

My biggest problem with the writer was his arrogant tone throughout the book and how he seemed to feel superior over other Cast Members who believed in the "Disney Magic".

I also found it hard to believe that it is against the rules for Cast Members, such as photographers, to come to the aid of a guest in a medical crisis. I can understand that a "face" or "fur" character cannot, but not the example he described in the book. I would think the resulting publicity and potential lawsuits would be something Disney would want to avoid.

For another book about Cast Member experiences, I'd suggest Kevin Yee's Mouse Trap about being a Disneyland Cast Member. It's a more balanced book.

I have started a petition for people who are concerned that Cast Member Confidential isn't the image of Disney that we want in the media. The cover has colorful animation that is attractive to children.

Please help me! I'm not trying to get the book banned. I just want a warning label or something, maybe wrap it in a plastic. If nothing ese it will be a message that we respect the values that Walt Disney stood for.

Please take a moment to sign up if you believe like I do that this book is harmful to the community.

I just finished reading the book. The Tarzan part I don't believe one bit, but no one is commenting on the POTC part when he's in the boat making out with his girlfriend and the lady in the back seat is dropping ashes into the moat!!! I've heard the rumor of this happening but seriously, what are the chances that he was there to witness this!

It was an interesting read, but I took a lot of what he said with a grain of salt.

I think he was trying to compare his book/experience to "Cruise Confidential" the story of a Carnival Cruise Ship worker. Which I found much more enjoyable and far more interesting.

That part touched me too! :sad1:

To: Sensible, conservative Americans
I find Chris Mitchell's "Cast Member Confidential" to be a disgusting and irresponsible work that is a detriment to youth and family-the foundations and building blocks of America. We urge the author to acquire as sense of personal responsibility and take action to rectify potential damages.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

really? seriously? and hey if you're going to try and ban a book, try standing behind your opinions and putting your name on there.

Nothing was more unbelievable to me than the part where the group of Brazilians lifted Mickey over their heads and carried him away.

I mean seriously??? I can't believe that there weren't enough true stories for him to share. I didn't understand the need to make some up...and very badly I might add.

it was a sarcastic comment. you're just focusing on it. and this person is delusional. everyone should be more worried about some idiot trying to ban books than some guy trying to make money off a book.

Please, please, please cease and desist from trying to push your personal opinions on what is "harmful to the community" onto others. If you don't want to read it-don't read it. If you don't want your children to see it, keep 'em away from it. Leave everyone else to make their own decisions.

i will softly disagree. i think we need the right wing "family values" types around just to keep it real.

Sorry, those folks have hurt me and hurt my friends too many times. It starts with something innocuous like keeping a book unfavorable to Disney out of the local Barnes and Noble to "protect the children" and before you know it real damage gets caused.

My ethics teacher always said.."don't just evaluate what's happening NOW, look ahead to see where it will lead".
