Did a search. Looks like it is a new e-mail service from Google. Here's a link:

The only way you can have Gmail at this time is with an invitation. Gmail is nice because you can store a lot more messages and it's free.

gmail is a great ad free email that is not yet available to the general public.
I have a feeling it is going to be available to the general public soon but as of now you still need to be invited to join.
