Does anyone have any information on the areas in and around Frederick, MD such as good neighborhoods, schools, etc.?

We're nearby, but closer to the city and to the east :)

We'd look at living out there, but the commute into DC is horrendous morning and night. You're not planning on commuting are you?

I hope to have as little commute as possible. lol I'd be working near Ft. Detrick so I dont' want to venture too far away from there until I know the area better. I want to live, work and have DD's school as close together as possible.

We're about 1/2 hour south, so I don't know much about specific neighborhoods. I do know that there are several posters from that area. I also know that's where I drive to go to the good Costco. :teeth: Frederick County is really growing a lot and they now have a lot of the major chain stores.

I went to Hood College for 3 semesters, but I really don't remember much about the area

I think everyone in MD is moving to WV.....Jefferson County is 1/2 hour away
from Frederick and is housing is exploding. :sad2: If you don't mind a short commute, you might check out over here!

I'm in Frederick County. What are the ages of your children? The entire county is one school system (as is all of Maryland). That said, some schools are better than others. Middletown, Walkersville & Tuscorora are good high schools in the county. Urbana & Linganore are too - but are further from Detrick than I'd want to commute. The Frederick city high schools are Frederick & Thomas Johnson - TJ being the better of the two. Of course, friends with honor students are satisified with Frederick High. Catoctin High would not be my first choice - however, housing prices are less in there in the northern part of the county.
Since you will be working at Ft Detrick, I recommend you locate West of Rt 15. Drive the route during rush hour prior to committing to lving somewhere. A 10 minute drive in non-rush hour can take 3 to 4x as long during rush hour.

What type of home are you looking for? I have to warn you that home prices are outragouse here. There are several nice developments right next to Detrick - the average home price there is $600,000+ for homes 10 year old or less. The homes in the older section go for $400,000+. That is pretty typical of all of Frederick COunty. PA and Washington County are cheaper but you will have to commute.
PM/Email me if you want specifics.

My DD will be in 6th grade next year. I want to narrow down the best school district and then decide where I want to look to live. Right now I'm just looking at rental apartments, townhouses and condos (a house for rent would be nice too but can't look those up too easily on the internet). I've found a few nice looking ones but I'm not sure of the area that they are in. I'll look at ones in the school districts you recommended and see what I come up with. I might have to find a realtor (do they do that for rentals?) to help me find a place. Originally the move was supposed to be end of august, now it looks like it will possibly be end of June. Thanks for your help.

I've lived in Frederick almost all of my life. You can definitely find affordable housing in nice areas for $300K, so don't stress out that everything is outrageous!
I agree with everything Mom2Boys said about the schools, except that I also know many people satisfied with Frederick High School. 6th grade here is in middle school, so you'll definitely want to consider your Middle/High school combo in the area you will settle into.

Feel free to PM me with any questions!
