Does anyone on your shopping list like mystery novels? There is a new series out called the mystery 101 series... very funny (like Janet Evanovich) with great characters and stories.

All of the books take place on the Jersey Shore at a small college. The main character is a Dean of Students. The reviews have been great!

Book 1, Missing Persons 101, was just released in September... book 2, Murder 101, will be out in March.

The author is a HUGE Disney fan!

Check out Amazon for author Heath P. Boice or, www.101mysteries.com for more details :yay:

is it in 1st person or 3rd person? maggie

It's in the first person... which really allows you to get to know the main character!popcorn::

Hmm.. sounds like you are the author. Dean of students/ Dean in user name.

Maybe I should be a detective.

Yes, you would make a great detective, Dean Doug is the main character of the book.
Sounds like a fun read - I'll check it out, even if I couldn't find any evidence of the author being a Disney fan on the website... ;)

Then wouldn't that be self promotion?

No kidding!

The funny thing is, if someone on the Dis said "Hey I wrote this book!" I'd probably hop right out to read it. I don't like being manipulated, though.

MTE! It's a bit sneaky. I'm all for full disclosure--and if the author said right away.. hey I've wrote this book, I'd be all over it.

But to sneak it in underneath the DIS rules is a bit underhanded, IMO.

To keep it on topic of the book, I've been taught that 1st person POV is too leading for reading audiences--(especially adult audiences). 1st person POV "diminishes the intelligence" of the readers per my writing professors. If the author tells all what is going in, the reader is not an active participant in the story with inferences and conclusions.

I learned the hard way -through a rough writers workshop session on one of my pieces to never ever ever use first person POV.

As a writing major, I learned the hard way about 1st person POV. I'll never do it again with portfolio work.

My humble apologies, all... :scared:
I did not intentionally mean to break a rule, manipulate, or offend any fellow Disney folks... again, my apologies. :sad2:

As you have said, it's no secret given my screen name that I am the author... and from my signature, and status on the boards, I am a big Disney fan... I thought it was obvious- I'm sorry if this was misleading.

As people on the boards were offering gift ideas, I got caught up in the moment and jumped in. As some of you with writing experience know, self-promotion (unless you're Grisham or Rowling) becomes part of life in order to get the word out... again, I got caught up in the moment. After all, if I meant to offend potential readers, I wouldn't get very far.

Again, I did not mean to offend folks, especially those whom I respect. :confused3

C'mon guys, he really wasn't being sneaky. It's pretty obvious if you go to the website at all. Give the guy a break.
I'll be checking it out. (OP- you had me at "Evanovich"! :thumbsup2 I love fun and light mysteries!)

I'm gonna check it out!

I just tore thru Grafton's T is for Trespass at lightning speed and am now mourning that it will be another year or two for another Kinsey Millhone novel.

I love Evanovich, Mott-Davidson, so I bet I will like your books too!

tried to get it at barnes and nobles today with no luck. I would like to "thumb" through it before buying, I really REALLY have a hard time reading 1st person mysteries, they drive me a little nuts. (too much "I did this" etc.) no offense dean. :) maggie

Yep, I don't like 1st person mysteries as well. I need to make my own conclusions, inferences and ideas. If the I did this business goes on, I basically think why bother reading it.. where is my mental stimulation?

I really don't like Evanovich either, but that's another story altogether.

No kidding!

I felt exactly the same way. I checked out the book right away, thinking to pick it up. But I realized right away that the OP was the author, but wouldn't just admit to being the author. That kind of "fiction" pretending to happen about a book, is something I don't like. It was an immediate turn off for me. It speaks of a person's character. So I certainly didn't read any possible fiction in the signature. I won't be reading the book.

CindyB on the other hand, is one of our resident DIS writers. We all cheered when she posted that her book was published :cool1: & we had no problem with her including her bookcover in her signature.

A group of people on the CB had a support thread for doing the NaNoWriMo - an annual (November) novel writing challenge last month. There is no need to be underhanded about having accomplished something here on the DIS.

Wow! Congrats to the OP for getting published! Sounds like a fun read and I will check it out. How can it be bad (1st person POV or 14th) if it's from another DIS board Disney fan:thumbsup2

Not that I wouldn't love to get the credit, but it wasn't me who got published. Another DIS'er named Cindy was published though.

As a writing major, I 'd love to be published in that way!

Okay, I know I just posted.....but I are you guys for REAL??? Harsh, Harsh, Harsh!! :scared1: It was obvious from the first post that it was his book. He wasn't being underhanded or would have gone to greater lengths to hide his identity! IMHO he was just trying to let people who may be interested know about his book without being too braggy. Why is this such a threat to some of you? Okay, now I'm sure you'll flame me too, but I think you all just need to lighten up. :confused3
