Georgia DOT has a series of projects to widen Interstate 75 to a minimum of 3 lanes in each direction throughout the state. From Atlanta northward, these projects have been complete for several years. Now the projects are concentrated in south Georgia, generally between Macon and the Florida line. Here's a snapshot of the current lane count (by mile) starting at the Florida line and traveling northward.
Miles 0-18 have been widened to 3 lanes each way.
Miles 18-49 currently have two lanes, but are being expanded to 3 lanes now
Miles 49-59 currently have two lanes, with projects in the future
Miles 59-72 have been widened to 3 lanes each way
Miles 72-84 currently have two lanes, but are being expanded to 3 lanes now
Miles 84-99 have been widened to 3 lanes each way
Miles 99-106 currently have two lanes, but are being expanded to 3 lanes now.
Additionally, I-475, a highway most north/south I-75 travelers use to bypass Macon, has been expanded to 3 lanes in each direction.
With I-75 serving as an important north/south corridor for the transport of goods and people, these capacity-adding projects will help keep the highway safer and less congested.
When actual lane closures are in effect or upcoming, they will be posted on this site on the statewide construction map and report. Otherwise, motorists can expect the pre-existing two lanes to be open with most work occurring off to the left or ride sides of the road. Caution is urged in these areas, and pay attention to the posted speed limits.
Remember on north/south interstates the miles start at zero on the southern border of a state and increase as you travel north.
