Wondering if we'll be among the first or last to board

I thought it was back to front but I did a search first to see if its changed since I flew with them a while ago.

Here is what I found:

Delta Air Lines uses a variation in its new system, introduced in early 2004. The zone that includes the back few rows boards first, then a middle section followed by a front section. It then goes back to a rear section.

The above is from a USA Today article dated 1/9/2006

Delta boards by zones...you won't know until you get to the airport and get your boarding pass. It used to be based on where you were seated. Sometimes, my dd would be in a different zone than dh and myself because she was in a window seat! Don't think that's the case anymore. It's more like the back of the plane boards first, the very front of the plane (what is now first class) is an early boarder I would imagine.

Last week I was row 2 and in Zone 2. They boarded Zones 1 and 2 at the same time, but there was a Zone 3 as well. Not sure the method to their madness.

Delta has several methods and apparently they are still experimenting. They have used a "tandem" method (produces two areas of intense stowing instead of just one for faster boarding), for example zones in front to rear order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 are boarded 6, 3, 5, 2, 4, 1. They have used the WILMA method, i.e. window, middle, aisle. And they have other permutations also.

What I really hate is when airlines board window seats first, then middle, then aisle. Since I always chose aisle seats, there is rarely any overhead space left by the time I board.
