DH got an application in the mail for AARP (American Association for Retired Persons), he's turning the big 5-0!!!!! But he's nowhere near retiring. He asked me about whether to join or not. But I'm not sure what to answer. I did suggest to get the 3 year membership and see how it works out. I told him that I would ask on the all knowing DIS, they would have good advice :thumbsup2 !!!

Does anyone on here belong to or know anything about this organization? What are the benefits that have helped you? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I think every American over 50 belongs, LOL. :lmao: At least it seems that way.

I more than get my $12 bucks a year back in hotel savings, along with a few other discounts. That is mostly it for me. If you read over their benefit guide, something may jump out there for you guys. They do push for you to buy a lot of stuff, lots of mail from them. And tell hubby welcome to the older set. :rotfl2:

I'm with you....I joined just for the discounts!! And the cute little magazine that comes monthly has some good articles!!! :thumbsup2

I didn't join when I got the application. Some places will give a discount just for being over 50, even without an AARP card. Never hurts to ask.

BTW, I am still working and will be for a long time.

I will be 50 next year and I've told DH I will join AARP the day I turn 50. :goodvibes I know they are the arm of a for-profit insurance company, but they have the power to advocate for Social Security and Medicare benefits for seniors. (Plus I like the discounts!) And I definitely won't be retiring anytime soon. :sunny:

Thanks everyone for your replies. Like you Dan, I think that we may get the most bang for our buck out of the hotel discounts. DH's mid-life crisis has a name........Harley Davidson :moped: .....yep, as of Feb. 20 I guess that I will be a "biker chick" :lmao: !!!! We will probably take quite a few long weekends during the year just exploring. That's were the hotel discounts will help out.

Thanks again!!!!!!! I knew I could count on you guys :woohoo: :woohoo: .

I got my membership the week before I turned 50. So far I've saved enough on one hotel reservation to pay for this year's membership. For some reason, my 44yo wife doesn't carry her spouse card with her.

I feel her pain. I'm only 40. I think that I will hide it behind my Victoria's Secret credit card :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: !!!!!

I have one, but DH won't use his........he's 2 yrs younger than me, so I signed me up when I turned 50, and he got a spouse card. I save enough to pay for it, so to me it is free. And we don't even travel that much....

I too love the discounts and enjoy the monthly magazine.

I belong! :) Like everyone else has said, the hotel discounts are worth the cost of the membership!
