Anyone in central Jersey with a middle schooler hear about . . .

There was an incident on Facebook where a "group of kids" (as yet unidentified (or at least disclosed)) put together a fake profile of a student named "Sean Berry," who was allegedly going to start at our school midsemester. Almost 200 children at the school exchanged detailed personal information with "Sean" including cell phone numbers and addresses.

This is what the school told us. The kids are telling us that after a lot of kids friended him, "Sean" threatened to come to the school, hide in a particular girls bathroom, kill someone and stuff the body in a heating vent. This was supposed to happen yesterday. The school was crawling with police all day, although the kids did attend school. Parents were told yesterday in a blast email, but the activity on Facebook was the last couple of weeks.

The school wants to "remind" us parents that kids should not be sharing personal info on internet sites.

It is really wacky and I'm still trying to understand what is truth and what is 12 year olds rumor-mongering.

Two nights ago my dd was so upset that I won't allow her on Facebook. I'm going to show her this post as another reason why I don't think she and others her age have the maturity to socialize on the internet;)

I'm not a "social networker" myself, but don't you have to be a certain age to be on Facebook? I mean, middle schoolers are 11,12,13 - you can be on Facebook that young?!

I think they are supposed to be 13, unfortunately that doesn't seem to matter. My dd is 11 (almost 12) and has friends who are on Facebook. My niece was also on at age 11. I already told her there is no way she will have an acct before 13, and I'm not sure she'll even be allowed to then. Lets just say I got the silent treatment, muttering under her breath and bedroom doorslamming for a few hours after that. Some day she'll thank me :)
