Oh, I love, love, love horses. Had them my whole childhood, but gave them up when I became interested in boys. I think that might have been a bad trade! ;) I’ve been thinking a lot lately about getting one, but don’t know if I could handle the expense and responsibility. And I feel like I wouldn’t be able to ride often enough since the weather isn’t that good here most of the year. Can anyone tell me how much feed and board run these days? And isn’t there a way to lease them or something?

I ride when I go home to Texas. My sister has horses. They are mostly all American saddle horses and a couple of quarter horses.

Don't know enough about them to brag, though. I just ride them :)

Rusty's a 7 yr old domesticated Mustang. My DD rides both English and Western and we've discovered he's an amazing jumper. ;) Not only can he jump the electric fence in th epaddock, he's pretty good at letting the other horses out of the barn. He's got an awesome disposition and is very partial to hugs.

Thanks BrerLizzie. That really isn't as expensive as I thought it would be. Of course it may be more around here. It might be worth checking into.

I loved riding/showing jumpers when I was a girl, but I haven't been on a horse in years.

DD just finished a week of riding camp, at the stable where I used to ride. She absolutely LOVED it, and got a Blue Ribbon in the horse show this morning.

She's also had her first fall (but probably not her last!) from a horse. They had games day on Wednesday and were riding bareback. The horse went one way, and she went another. He tripped over her a little bit, so she got some scrapes on her face and arms, and a bloody nose. But she got right back on that horse!!

She's definitely going to start regular lessons in the fall, when she's back in school. I was even thinking I might take it up again!!

Isn’t it funny how resilient kids are? I can’t imagine falling off a horse now; it would probably kill me! But when I was a little kid I used to jump on wild ponies (no saddle/no bridle) and get thrown right off. And it was fun! Once I was thrown off my horse when she was spooked and stopped really quickly. I flew right over her head and then she stepped on my back. And I was fine. My dad loves to tell the story of the time a horse ran away with me when I was about 5 yrs. old. Dad was about to have a heart attack, but when they finally caught the horse I was just laughing and laughing. Kids are crazy -- I'm glad I don't have any since I'm sure they'd give me heart failure.

Well, Puglsey, I have to admit I had that fear when I first saw my DD's beautiful little face and thought about how MUCH worse it could have been.

And I instantly had a lot more empathy for my own parents, who weren't at all crazy about my riding....they let me do it, but they were always fearful. They knew a girl when they were little who had her face permanently disfigured by being stepped on by a horse.

I told my DD we don't want to tell grandma about her fall!

I love horseback riding! I never owned a horse of my own, but I went to an overnight horsecamp for 4 summers in a row where we rode them and learned to take care of them. We even got to do packtrips. :)

DD broke her collarbone last summer in a fall. It wasn't fun but any sport has it's risk. You just do what you can to minimize it by wearing the appropriate equipment and hope for the best.
