Center for medical weight loss?
Has anyone had any experience with this? I want to lose 10 lbs and met with the diet counselor this week. There are 3 levels of calories/day-800,900, and 1000. It seems very low calorie. I guess I'll try it but just wanted to hear reviews. There is a maintenance program because I realize if I go back to my present eating I'd likely put back on the weight. Thanks!

You need to be careful with those kinds of diets. They need to be done under a doctor's supervision. You need to make sure you get all the nutritional requirements that your body needs, like vitamins and minerals and all that.

I would say definitely not. Those are starvation mode calories. I have a quite a few friends that are body builders and fitness competitors. They will tell you that you (or most women) shouldn't go below 1200 calories. If you are at 1200 calories and you aren't losing the weight then you need to move more. Because anything less than that will make your body switch into starvation mode and make losing and keeping weight off that much more difficult.

So will you lose weight? Yes. Will you most likely gain it all back and then some? Yes.

ETA-I also think that sounds pretty extreme for somebody that only wants to lose 10 pounds. I would be really leery of any company that thought this was an appropriate plan for that kind of weight loss. JMHO.

I thought the minimum safe calorie intake was 1100?

When I wanted to shed a little weight, I would eat a small salad (normal restaurant side salad - think Chilis) and 4oz of grilled chicken. I'd also have a bowl of any high-fiber cereal in the morning. A navel orange as a snack in the afternoon, and have a veggie-loaded dinner with about 3-4oz of a protein.

Cutting out soda and greatly reducing my coffee (as I put TONS of sugar/creamer in mine) intake helped a lot too. I would also go for daily walks through our park.

Good luck in your pursuit.

10 lbs is not actually that much. I started WW a fortnight ago and have already lost 7lbs in two weeks. There is more likely a safer and more maintainable way to lose the weight you want.

A doctor that I know well would supervise me.

I'm concerned about the low calorie intake too. Since I'm not comfortable with this, I think that I'll try myself. I've done it before but have been so draggy lately that I thought having someone monitoring me would work better.

Good luck in your pursuit.

This is great! In the past, I was not a big WW fan but I have lots of friends who are. What program are you doing? I know there are so many. Also are you doing it online or going to meetings? I homeschool my daughter, so the online would probably be better for me.

I know if I put my mind to it and get myself moving, I could do it easily.
Thanks everyone for your input.

I second the WW suggestion. I started in early August, and have lost about 15 pounds. I reached that at the end of August and switched over to maintaining, which has been going quite well.

I prefer WW to calorie counting because it causes you to consider the overall nutritional quality of the food. I also like WW because it takes into consideration your activity level.

I do the online version.

I am doing the standard points counting diet here in the UK. From what I've read it's very similar to those available in the states. I am currently 177 lbs (was 184 when I started) and allowed 19 points per day. I find it pretty easy to stick to and find that I'm less inclined to 'cheat' because I can still eat 'normal' foods, just less of them and it encourages me to choose the healthier option. For example, last night I had 2 points left. I could have had a small bar of chocolate but chose to have an apple and a low fat mousse instead.

I don't go to classes or do it online - I previously went to a class so I have all the information and just do it at home now. It saves me the cost of going to the class each week and I find I can be pretty regimented if I set my mind to it.

I encourage you to give it a go - how soon do you want to lose the 10 lbs?

I personally wouldn't pay anyone to help me lose 10 lb. :goodvibes Eat less, move more, and aside from any unknown medical contributing factors, the weight should come off in about 4-6 weeks. If you need more structure than that I agree with the PPs who recommended Weight Watchers.

Stay positive momma and get that booty moving! Have you ever tried zumba? You'll sweat your booty off.

I believe that is the diet my friend is on now. It cost her $600 to sign up and she goes for meetings 6 times over a 12 week period. If it is the same one it is very severe. First 14 days were hot lemon water, no caffiene, an egg white for breakfast, unlimited veggies and 3 pieces of fruit per day, She could have a boca burger if she felt she was very hungry.
Weighed in after the second week she was down 8 pounds. She was sold some vitamin supplements to block fat and starch (both were chromium picolinate). From there she could have unlimited protein, veggies and 3 fruits for the next two weeks. She has only gotten this far, so I don't know anymore.
I would not do her diet, it is too severe. I would recommend WW for anyone with 10 pounds or less to lose, it will show you what you need to fix so you can lose the weight and it will teach you how to maintain your loss.

Thank-you and congratulations on the weight loss!!!
I'd like to lose it Nov 19th for our WDW trip. I have lost 3 lbs this week just watching my diet.

My daughter's nanny goes to zumba and loves it! I'm afraid with my bulging disk that it might slip more with the dance moves.

Thanks for sharing! $600 That's almost 2 APs:rotfl: I'd rather renew our passes.

This is my plan:

2- 3 Lean cuisines/ day
fresh fruit/ veggies
treadmill/weights

I take thyroid meds watching my diet will help it to function better.

Thanks all of you for your input! You've given me the motivation I need to get going!!!!

Even before I started the thyroid meds, I had a pretty good metabolism so it shouldn't be too hard.

I wouldn't try anything this extreme for 10 or even 30 pounds. If you had a lot to lose and other things weren't working, then maybe it's an option.

I would also recommend Weight Watchers, especially if you only want to lose 10 pounds. Not only will you lose, you will learn now much you can eat each day without gaining it all back. With a very low calorie diet, you will most likely gain it back as soon as you start eating normally again.

I started WW on August 1 and was down 23 pounds as of this morning. My DH started a week after I did and he's down almost 22. It definitely works!

Just want to say that I am so impressed with all the weight y'all are losing. When i'm feeling unmotivated I'll just click on this thread!!!

I think this is what my dad this spring thru summer and he did lose alot of weight. I don't think his calories were that restricted, but he's a man so he probably would get more. I know it was very strict, 17 weeks and about $600. He lost like 60lbs in 17 weeks, he's very thin now. But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I've lost 32lbs this year, it took me 7-8 months, and I made some small changes to my diet, but mostly ate the same just ALOT less and moved ALOT more. I swear by it. Brownies in the oven now and I'll get up and do 5-6 miles on the treadmill in the morning! :thumbsup2 I'm a size 4-6 now and I love it!
