My son is still deciding what P&S he wants for his bday and I;m trying to help him research some. he's narrowed it down to 2 more cameras. Most features are the same 16mp, 3" screen, CMOS, 1080, and price

Canon Elph 340
faster recording @ 10fps
slightly slimmer, lighter
Snapsort ranks this better in low light even though aperture is smaller - not sure why

Samsung WB380
bigger optical zoom 21 vs 12
slightly wider angle 23 vs 25
aperature 2.8 vs 3.6
likes the "look" of the camera

No store carries the Samsung around here so it would be an order. Just wondering if anyone has one and what do you think of the pocketability of it. It's for a boy so it will be in his pocket.

The Canon has better noise reduction algorithms than Samsung, but between the two it'd probably be a wash.

I like how Canon P&S cameras shoot, and I've handled a predecessor to the Samsung and wasn't quite as pleased with it, but there's a lot of personal preference there. The Elph 340 and WB380 aren't technically in the same class, with the Elph being a subcompact, while the WB380 is a travel zoom and somewhat larger in all three dimensions (the Canon equivalent is the SX280) - but they're honestly both very pocketable and take pretty much the same pouch-style cases. The extra wide angle is nice to have, too.

Technical discussions aside, if he wants the Samsung, he'll probably be happier with it regardless of anything else ... and it is a sharp looking camera. And if you get it from somewhere with a good return policy, there's not much of a risk. :)
