Hi,
Im hoping there is someone on here that can help. I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid 8 weeks ago and started on thyroxine at 25mg I went back to the drs this week and she was shocked to see that my reading was 78 so she doubled my meds for a week and then said to take triple !!
I felt fine when i went bk to drs so I was surprised to hear that it needed tripling to 75 mg but ive took her advice and started to tke double its 4 days l8r now and my heart feels like its going to pound out of my chest and I feel really ill my fingers hurt and im so irritable !! Is this normal or do I need to go bk to drs ?? I dont want to make an issue out of nothing with the dr as she told me I cant get side effects from the med :confused3
Thanks in advance if you can help id be really grateful x

I don't know much about it but you could try calling the NHS direct line for advice & they should be able to tell you if its normal or not.

Tel no is - 0845 46 47 (thats the whole number).

Hope you feel better soon.

hello,
I was diagnosed 16 years ago with an hypothyroidism. I am on 200mg a day of thyroxine ( very high I know lol!). I would make an appointment with your gp. You might be suffering due to being too high, normally they take you dose up in 25mg so tripling it might be too much. Saying that, your body is adapting to finally having a good metabolism so it might settle.. its nothing to worry about in the short term, BUT do make an appointment tomorrow to see her again and tell her your symptoms.
If you need any other help let me know been like this for years lol :upsidedow

Thanks liesa the worst thing about this is that I feel so down with it the dr said thats normal and just shrugged it off but im not that sort of person !! Im normally active and out and about all the time and this has just grounded me I never seem to have the energy to do anything with the kids and whenever I go back to the drs she just shrugs it off as well what do you expect lets get your levels right and then u will be fine but she never tells me how long that will take !! Im prob being really silly but please tell me it gets better !!

snatches back the 'an' from last post don't know how that got in there!!!

to be honest yes it does get better once your thyroid level is normal, you will have regular TFT's done in the first year and will get to know the nurse well heee..

I suffer with dreadful depression if i dont take my medicine so please, even if you think you are 'better' once you have this illness it NEVER goes away. I would ask to see another doctor if her attitude doesn't improve though.

Also did you know that you are entitled to free prescriptions for life now?

the pharmacist told me about the free prescription when he dispensed the thyroxine this time ! thanks
I must admit i am getting really annoyed with my drs attiude I know there are worse things you cud have and to a gp its really minor but its still happening to me and I have a ton of questions and feel like dr just wants me out the room and im just a nuisance to her !!
I always seem to be in tears at the mo not helped by the fact that my ds is having treatment for cancer ( great timing for me to have health issues too - NOT !!)
god this reads like im full of self pity and im so not I guess I just want someone to say in x amount of days you will fantastic LOL

give it a month and i promise you, you WILL start to feel better, your depression might not just be linked to your thyroid prob though, with all the probs you got on don't forget to be nice to YOU!

Any questions I can answer, i have a great doctor and have studied medicine so be free to pm me and ask questions or ask me here ok? And it is NOT minor, an underactive thyroid gland NOT treated can EVENTUALLY kill you.. so don't ever think its minor ok?? ~lesson over~

when ur gp seems to be making you leave say, and be firm.. " I haven't finished yet, I have some questions I need answering today please" and I promise you, she will stop and listen!!
hhehehee

Bless you - it sounds like you have so much going on that its not surprising you feel depressed & keep crying. I am sure things will improve but I think you should definately see a different doctor.

Lots of PD coming your way.... pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust:

Thank you so much liesa (you made me cry just being nice !!) I do think that the depression is linked to my thyroid *** my ds has been ill for 6 years now and its always been never ending in terms of treatment its sh*t but i deal with it its only been the last 6 months or so that I have struggled with everything and it was part of the reason they did the first tft test !!
The question I would most like answering is why when my legs are really painful does pain killers not help at all ?? I asked my gp and she rolled her eyes and said that will be your thyroid but why does that stop the pain killers taking effect??
I promise ill stop hassling you if u can answer that and honestly just having someone tell me im not going mad has helped more than I can describe so THANK YOU so much x

I had an Overactive thyroid, was on beta blockers and some other medication. They eventually gave me radioactive iodine, which then put me underactive, which was to be expected. When i was overactive ,i had symptons like you are experiencing, although do not know if the thyroxine would make it over, but i do not see why not. I had pounding as if my heart was going to come out of my chest, Trembling, and being irritable, to the extent that the slightest thing would set me of, will not even tell things i done, which normally i would just ignore.
I am now on 100mg of thyroxine, was upped a few months ago to this dose, and feeling a lot better.
Being a male, the consultant told me it was easier to get under control, whereas a woman can take a bit longer.
But like others say ,once they get it under control you will feel a lot better.

I will be honest with you, for the past few years I have been terrible at taking my tablets, and its only just recently that I have been getting better, but when i started to take them religiously again, I found I had the same symptoms as you, heart racing, aching hands, aching legs.. almost like sciatica.. I found that NOTHING dented the aching legs and if I crouched or when i strained they killed!! It did get better and I dont get it so much now, but I am sure its something to do with your body working faster and your muscles and nerves just arent used to it. I find a nice hot water bottle helps and lots of TLC.

by the way noticed you are in tamworth!! I am just down road in Sutton coldfield.!! small world

Thats what was worrying me that they upped the meds too much !! I think ill give it a couple more days and if no better go bk see if they will redo my bloods and then they can see if im now on too much!!
Thanks for the reply its good to know im going mad !!!

My wife had Thyroid cancer two years ago and had hers out completely. It's only in the last six months or so that she finally feels her doseage is right. As the others have said it isn't as straightforward as it seems to level it out but you'll get there. We were lucky as we had the surgeons and oncologist advising her doctor as well so there was a lot of experience there, but it still took some time.
Hope you feel better soon, and have a  in the meantime.

Same boat here over active.just in the middle of treatment.had the fealing at last consult that it will end up taken out or iodene
For the OP please take your meds as they will help, like outhers have said it can take time to resolve and boddy get used to it
Me have a tablet to block the thyriod and take thyroid supliments.Got some of my wieght back.after the course should find out what they want to do
Then its underactive for rest of life if they remove it

Hello, my first visit to this site (to look at Bob's wedding details!).

I have had an under active thyroid for around 5 years now.

It took me a LONG time to feel better, the doctor started me on 50mg for two months (think) then had another blood test, had to increase tablets for another month or so and kept doing this until reached 150mg. The doctor did this gradually though.

During the time I felt very low and so tired.

My memory was non existent also.

I also had times when my legs just ached like mad, remember dragging myself around disney once thinking I was going to collapse! Have you tried arnica gel on your legs, i find it helps with aches and pains

When you get your dosage correct you will have a blood test every 6/12 months to keep an eye on it.

For people who do not have it, it seems so simple but I can totally understand how you feel but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Please realise this takes time and does not get sorted overnight.
