American History X - very heavy
Blade Runner
Platoon

Agreed, Blade Runner has been a favorite since I was a kid, but American History X blew me away!!!!!!!!!!! It's very dark and disturbing, but wow it's powerful.

Another vote for Grosse Pointe Blank, and my very fave Cusack flick, Say Anything! Also Serendipity!

I also watch Gone in 60 Seconds and Con Air a lot also.

There are some really good movies in this thread. Without duplicating any movies, here are my suggestions. They are both comedies.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles (John Candy + Steve Martin = Perfection!)

Defending Your Life (Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep)

Tora! Tora! Tora! - if you like WWII movies, this is a must see
Beverly Hills Cop - one of my favorite comedies ever
The Others - I watched this and soon as it was over, I immediately watched it again

Titanic - Daughter is saying this one, it's not 1 on my top list
Saving Private Ryan - I'm a WWII junkie, and the beach scene makes this a top hit for me

The Orphanage - Spanish film but one of my favorites of all time

I'm pretty sure the Orphanage, Mad Money, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and possibly Letters from Iwo Jima and Tora! Tora! Tora!, are on instant watch. The last 2 may have been for a limited time. I missed Judgment at Nuremberg when it was on instant and I could just kick myself now.

I just read Paper Clips upthread, This is a fantastic documentary and is available on instant watch at Netflix. I liked Outsourced mentioned by the same poster, too. It also is on instant watch.

I was just about to get on and say the Matchmaker. I sit down and watch it every time it is on TV.
I like the next two as well.

The Da Vinci Code was a fantasic book and a terrible movie. Such a disappointment.

I think they did a much better job with Angels and Demons. Though it could have just been a case of having very low expectations after seeing the Da Vinci Code.

I haven't read the book yet so I wouldn't know. I agree, though, that A&D was so much better movie-wise.

2 other films that I really liked, but am not sure if they hit the SUPER great category (though I'd certainly watch either repeatedly and love every minute of it) are:

Frequency - Starring Dennis Quaid
The Guardian - Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher (I like this a bit more)

Both of them have very good story lines.

Steal Big, Steal Little

I got DH hooked on this. I love this movie.

Band of Brothers - ok, so not a movie but a mini-series, but may be the single greatest and most well done telling of something like this - follows company "E" of the 506th parachute infantry regiment of the US Army from D-Day to the end of WWII and is just so incredibly well done in every possible way it is almost unbelievable. If you saw Saving Private Ryan and thought it was good, watch BOB and then SPR will seem like a second rate movie afterwards, it is that much better. Should be required viewing for all Americans.

Firefly (the TV series) and Serenity (the movie) - curse you Fox and your sudden but inevitable betrayal! A Western set in space - no aliens, just humans (and horses!) that was so well done the people at Fox who decided to cancel it after four episodes should all be strung up on a tree at high noon. (I don't like Westerns and am not a huge Sci-Fi fan but Firefly is just amazing, and so is Serenity, but watch Firefly first)

Band of Brothers - If you haven't see it - this is hands down the best of the best out there for WWII movies/shows. And we own a lot of them. We own this on DVD and we still watch it any time we see it on TV.

Also, can't go wrong with the whole Firefly/Serenity game.

I haven't read the book yet so I wouldn't know. I agree, though, that A&D was so much better movie-wise.

I know it's impossible for a movie to include everything in a book, but I thought Da Vinci Code left out so much stuff that should have been included. While I was watching it, I found myself wondering how anyone who hadn't read the book could follow the story.

I just looked it up and IMDB shows that the extended cut is 25 minutes longer than the theatrical release. I wonder how much better that would make it.

March of the Penguin - documentary and I wouldn't recommend too many on a "best of" list (unless the question was only on documentaries) and I think it's instant watch

Roots - I was going to say this earlier, but it's such a heavy topic that I didn't.
John Q - Denzel Washington holds a hospital hostage until they agree to perform surgery on his son.
The Bourne series - see someone already mentioned them however
Harry Potter series
Lord of the Rings
Misery - It's older, but watch it if you've not seen it (it's also on instant)
Liar Liar - on instant

Jeff Dunham: Spark of Insanity
Jeff Dunham: Arguing with Myself - both of these are IMO, the best stand up comedy routines ever and both are on instant. I didn't care as much for the Christmas special he released last year.

Star Trek (2009) - I think this was a pretty risky move that could have been a huge disaster. People really take their Star Trek seriously. I just loved this and can't stress enough how well done it truly is.

Transformers - This is a series that is iffy. If you like the genre/theme you will LOVE them. If not, I highly suggest you pass. For us, these are must own films. The combination of humor, Sci-Fi and action are 2nd to none for my family.

Didn't they just kill the movie The Da Vinci Code, so terrible, and the book was so excellent. Ron Howard did a horrible job. The most interesting stuff in the book was left out. Saw Angels and Demons that was better, but I was so terribly disappointed in the Da Vinci Code.

On subject, recent movies I had seen that were good were Gran Torino with Clint Eastwood, thought I wouldn't like it, but it was really good.

Another little movie I saw recently was called Once, and it was a very good, about musicians that meet up and unrequited love, such a sweet good movie.

Australia was another good movie.

I also liked Star Trek the most recent one with the younger actors, this is a surprise for me bc I don't really like Star Trek, those aren't my type of movies, but it was good.

Really great movies: Braveheart, To Kill a Mockingbird, and the many others mentioned above.

I have to second Sling Blade, that was an excellent movie for anyone who hasn't seen it.
