My sister has two - and they're absolutely adorable! Very clean pets - they use a litter box just like a cat would.. When the two of them get to playing it's a riot watching them.. They're also very lovable - she can drape them around her neck and carry them around the house - or take them on a leash outdoors.. They travel very well - she brings them up from Florida in the back of her van (in their bigger cage) every year when she comes to visit..
I'm not sure how they would interact with other animals.. My sister has a large gated playpen area for them to run around in - as well as a very large cage when they aren't out playing and are ready to go to sleep.. You can't really let them run freely through the house unless you have every single area closed off that they could squeeze behind or under as their bodies are very pliable..
I've had a few...I found them very amusing. When they play (and they are very playful) they will hunch their backs up and hop sideways while making a squeaking sound They are better in pairs, they get very lonely without another to play with. Biggest draw back I found was that even when de-scented, they still smell funky They also need to be trained at an early age not to bite, they have very sharp teeth and even though they are not aggressive, during play, they bite hard if not trained properly. One time my son was holding one and went to kiss it on the head, it bite him right between the nostrils and wouldn't let go I know it was painful but I couldn't stop laughing, it was just hanging from his nose Bad mommy
I've never noticed any odor from my sister's ferrets at all - and I have quite a sensitive nose.. Don't know that she has done anything "special" to prevent it, but they definitely don't have any type of bad smell..
we have a ferret & she is our baby. ferrets are great pets but you need to ferret proof your home & make sure you can make the commitment to your fuzzy friend. any ferret you get from a petshop or rescue should be descented (although theres still a light musk) & nuetered. ferrets are generally good with kids & other pets. its the other pets i'd be worried about but our 2 dogs could care less about our fuzzy. our fuzzy sleeps alot but does play out of her cage for hours at a time in our bedroom & guest room ferrets need playtime & activities/stimulation. she cuddles, jumps, eeks & is a joy.

Really? I have always notice a musky smell, not over powering but a tinge. I would even bath them once a week
Oh, and OP...I also had cats and they would play together. The cats would get bored after awhile but they got along....I'm not sure how they would react to birds are other smaller animals
I agree on this one!! I had a room mate that surprised me by bringing one home one time. They are the grossest ,nastiest, smelliest things ever!!! I'm sorry just looking at a picture of one makes me cringe
